Hi I am a MT1 at Hartt and I figured I would start off saying that I absolutely LOVE the program, the teachers, the classes, the atmosphere, and students in the program. I chose Hartt because it felt like a family, people are genuinely happy for other student’s successes, and everyone genuinely cares for each other.

Okay, so the freshman course load:
Ballet
Music Theory/ Diatonic Harmony (both are music theory courses)
Ear Training (sight singing and pitch)
Rhetoric and Writing
Acting
Voice and Speech (diction, IPA, etc)
Stagecraft (only one semester of the class, students do tech work both semesters)
Private Voice Lesson
Masterclass- everyone in your vocal studio gets together and sings for each other
Musical Theatre Chorus Lab
HLM020- an online class learning how to use the library (it only lasts 1st semester)
Paranov- you attend 4 classes about different music/ arts related topics and then you see 3 shows outside of your major (so an opera, symphony, dance show, etc)

I think if you can, you should visit the school because you will LOVE it. If you have any more questions I am sure whoever checks the post will be happy to answer! (I’ll try to check this, but no promises we are kept very busy!)

I am so excited that you guys are interested in the Hartt School! and I hope to see you on a tour or next year as a freshman!

Love,
Taylor

Hey, are the freshmen MT’s required to have apple laptops as well? Also, which dorms are better as far as how the complexes are and Hawk Hall?

MT majors are not required to have Apple laptops, though you do need a laptop for MT Chorus Lab (but as a college student in general you should have a laptop).

Hawk hall is VERY nice, if I were you I would try to get in there, if not the complexes aren’t bad (I live in a complex and I don’t mind it at all). Hawk Hall does have a bit of a time commitment (1 hour meeting once a week, which occasionally conflict with crew assignments)

Do you by chance know if any MTs are in hawk hall this year and what learning community they wrote the essay for? Thanks (:

There are a lot of MT students in Hawk Hall, I am not sure what floors they are on (I know there are a few on Wellness and Green Team)

Do you know when incoming freshman will be notified of acceptances? Also, were you called on the phone, emailed, or sent a snail mail letter?

D was accepted EA in December, westcoastmt-- it was a snail mail envelope, very small. You’d never guess from the envelope that it was an acceptance.

Thanks for the info Gwen. My D hasn’t heard anything from Hartt, and they do not seem to have an online status check.

My D just got her acceptance letter via snail mail today (yay!) We live in New York, so it may take another day or two for people who live further away.

My D is a freshman… Her letter came in the mail at the end of March. Small envelope. Ps… She loves Hartt

Congratulations to your daughter! Is she going into acting or MT?

My daughter is a musical theater major (freshman) at the Hartt school. She has grown immensely as a person and a performer.I can say without hesitation that the faculty at Hartt is devoted to each student’s potential and seeing it take a path that might otherwise go unrecognized.Best wishes to all potential Hartt School freshmen over the next few weeks as you start to make your decisions!

I don’t know if any Hartt students/parents are still checking this thread, but if so, is there any sort of cut system for musical theatre at Hartt? Do all of the seniors get to participate in the showcase? Any idea what the size of the current freshman or sophomore class is for musical theatre? Thanks very much!!

kadieblue-- no, there is no cut system. Occasionally a student will be advised to leave…but it’s very occasional. The current MT class is 24 and I believe Hartt intended to try for a smaller class for this coming year. I believe all seniors participate in the showcase…if you want more info pm me – D is an acting major and has lots of MT friends. It has been the best time of her life and I’m sure she’d be happy to answer questions!

Kadieblue - I’m a freshman at Hartt (an acting major, but we have tons of classes with the MT’s and know their program very well). If you want to pm me any questions I’d be happy to answer! It really is a wonderful school. I absolutely love it!

Gwen and MarisaRose thank you! The system is not letting me pm but I will keep trying to figure it out. So glad that you both have such nice things to say about Hartt!!

the system will not let me pm - i have questions about hartt though.
