Now that decisions are out for the class of 2014, I think we inherit this forum! (:

LOL, I was thinking the same thing!
I’m not sure if I’ll apply to Harvard, but I may, so I’ll join, as of now!
Where else do you think you’ll apply?

I think it’s self-explanatory from my username lol.

But yeah, I’m also definitely applying to UCI, UCLA, and UCB (in state). If I have time I’ll consider Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, and Rice since I’m trying to find some “low reach/high match” schools.

Yeah, definitely.
I think Harvard will probably be the only Ivy I apply to, I might go for Brown though. I’m really loving Duke and UChicago.
Safety for me is UNC-CH in-state.

I’ll throw an app in for Harvard, just because I would actually be interested in attending if I got accepted (I’ve researched its programs fairly extensively, and it seems to be a good fit for prospective political science + humanities majors like me). But I don’t expect to get in at all, so I’ve got my eyes set on Columbia for the time being. I think I’ll also apply to Princeton, and to UC Berkeley and UCLA (I’m moving to California for my senior year, so I’ll be in-state by then). Oh, and U of Toronto, since I’m a Canadian citizen.

Any other prospective humanities majors in here?

I might major in a humanity, I’m undecided as of yet. I loveeee biology, but I’m also interested in history and things like that. AND I ADOREEEE languages, particularly French.

^ Why hello there fellow language lover Languages are actually the main aspect of my app; I’m fluent in 4 (two non-native), currently learning a fifth, and have been doing a lot of things related to them (e.g. learning, tutoring, translation job, serving as a teaching assistant). I hope being an Asian applicant with primary interests in languages, literature, and the humanities serves as a “tip factor”…

Ha, I’m nowhere near your level of proficiency(I wish), however, I’ve taken quite an interest in French and Spanish, and I’m currently working on Arabic. (Which is hard, as it’s not a romance language, but it’s new, and exciting)
Yes, that seems like it would be the case, as(at least on CC), most Asian applicants seem focused on math and science.

You’re learning Arabic? Very cool! The language I’m currently picking up is German, and though it’s not a Romance language like French or Spanish (both of which are the non-native languages I’m fluent in), it certainly doesn’t have the “exotic feel” that Arabic does. On that note, I hope to learn Hebrew sometime (both modern and biblical) in the future. I think it would be a fairly interesting experience to say the least… ;)

I vaguely recall hearing a UC rep saying that you need to have lived in the state for a certain # of years before you can qualify for in-state tuition and easier admission… I could be hallucinating though. Nevertheless you should probably research that; just giving you a heads up (:

Yes, I have thought about Hebrew as well as possibly Greek.
And I thought about German, but it just didn’t appeal to me the way that others do.
I almost wish that I could learn every language, but I know I’d get them confused haha!

^ I see. Thanks for the information; I’ll be sure to look into that.

And goldysocks, regarding your statement about mixing up different languages, that’s moreso a problem that occurs during the initial stages of learning. Once you get the “feel” for a particular language, or once you get to the point where you can actually think in that language, it most likely won’t pose a concern to you anymore. I have to continually switch between English, Mandarin Chinese, French, and Spanish for my translation job… it gets to be quite a hassle at times, but I like it. :)

I will certainly be applying.

silverturtle you’re in our grade? Dang, you’re definitely going to get in. I’ve seen you around these forums a lot.

Well, I’m applying to HYPS. That’s it.

Unfortunately, CC activity does not have a direct impact on one’s chance of admittance.

^silverturtle is in the high school class of 2011.

I’ll probably apply just for kicks. The only thing appealing about Harvard is it’s name.

silverturtle what are your stats?

I will be taking Subject Tests soon, so my stats are not yet complete. (My application basics at the moment: 2400 SAT, 4.0 unweighted GPA, 1/409 rank, a few leadership positions, passion for piano improvisation, and half Hispanic.)

I cannot compare, and I am an asian male ■■■

Piano improv, huh? You’ve probably heard of Merton, or maybe even Ben Fold’s parody of him?
