Perhaps many students think AWS...and schools like them...will just be an extension of their Andover experience. Lots of big schools, big cities on the top list (with a few exceptions.) Very different from the Andover setting, and possibly different from the Andover experience.

I don't know if more Exeter grads "choose" Georgetown over MIT, Princeton etc. It is just as likely that these particular grads didn't get in to MIT, Princeton and that Georgetown is a second choice (no offense to Georgetown, because it's an excellent school).

You could also make the statement that more Stuyvesant grads "choose" Dartmouth and Columbia over Harvard and Princeton because 14 are going to Dartmouth and 17 are going to Columbia, but I don't know if that's true because we don't know where else they applied and got into.

You are soooo insightful, midatlmom!

as an anecdote of a real conversation Monday with two Harvard students. I returned from my reunion at Williams and we started talking colleges. Both said , "wow, that is where I really wanted to go but I didn't get in!"

Incidentally, what do you make of the yield drop at Williams this year, despite the huge number of ED and "early write" admissions?

Princeton 15
Georgetown 12
Dartmouth 12
NYU 11
George Washington 10
Univ Penn 9
Harvard 8
Yale 8
Columbia 7
Wesleyan 7

Harvard 17
Georgetown 14
Columbia 13
Dartmouth 12
Johns Hopkins 10
Princeton 10
Wesleyan 10
Boston College 8
Cornell University 8
Yale 8

Interesting that contrary to popular image (unless it's changed drastically in the last twenty years), Wesleyan is the most popular LAC among preppies.

A voice from the past!

Earlier some people were inquiring about the number of Andover applicants to certain schools and here's a link that may be of help (I've posted it before so it might look familiar to some people). A list of raw numbers (Applied/Admitted/Waitlisted/Rejected for each college) for the class of 2006 was printed in the Phillipian in the same issue as this article but it seems to be unavailable electronically.

P.S. Anyone have the Boston Latin numbers for this year? If they're sub-18, we (Andover) might have the tops to Harvard in terms of pure quantity.

Btw, Exeter sent EIGHT to Harvard this year??

My reaction exactly.

is andover one of the best high schools? because i havent heard of it before.

It is a selective boarding school that has a fine academic reputation. Lots of folks haven't heard of the top boarding schools in USA. Now you know.

Take the tour, and to start, listen to Sammy Davis, Jr.:

cool. thanks!

These are some good schools that obviously serve as "back ups" for students hoping to attend the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, etc, in that, of those admitted, relatively few enrolled:

This is just one school result. But, I can see that Harvard is indeed most preferred among top students. I can also see that MIT is as much preferred as H for the math/science/eng type students.

Harvard, MIT and Stanford compete for the top math/science people, with the boutique-sized Caltech taking a few.
