Harvard Class of 2021 Waitlisted Discussion

Not a concern for them, unfortunately.

Well said, @doorrealthe. Unfortunately, though, @STEM2017 is correct.

@doorrealthe Although I could be wrong, I have a feeling that Harvard’s waitlist rate is much higher than 2-3%. The fact that they don’t disclose their waitlist numbers like other schools do indicates that they have a long waitlist to increase the diversity of students from which they can choose to fill any gaps in the student body. Also, from my empirical evidence, I’ve noticed lots of people around me who didn’t even get to many Ivies get waitlisted at Harvard. So your hopes shouldn’t have been high in the first place.

Totally agree with @y90y90 I don’t think wait list should be high hopes. Why would we be mad at Harvard for not accepting kids off the WL. They admitted their first choice kids. So what if they admitted too many. It is what it is. And I’m saying this with a kid on the list. She chose another school she loved. If Harvard came around she would consider but isn’t even counting on it.

i think Harvard had the most heart anyway. Their interviewer as well as admissions officers have given a face to, and were very nice through the process. ( Which no doubt is extraordinarily difficult on them too ). They’ve actually been wonderful all things considered. They could not have anticipated this. Anyway, who knows what could happen over the summer etc. It’s a good idea to start getting active in the registered school and if it’s meant to be that there’s some change/ leave it to that. Good luck to everyone in their freshman year where ever that may be !

All waitlisted students are really hoping against hope* – and this year it proved to be 100% true.

FWIW: I firmly believe every waitlisted student should heed a few wise words from a Harvard peer school: https://admissions.yale.edu/after-colleges-accept-you

Best of luck to everyone wherever you have chosen to matriculate!

Do you guys think that they’ll make an update to our portal confirming that they won’t use the waitlist?

Yale just rejected me officially hopefully Harvard will do the same so I can get some closure

@gibby what happens after not taking off wait list? Does this secret process z list happen? How would we know if offered z list? Thank for any possible information.

@eternalbluesky They definitely will.

So, if a student’s mother or father did NOT graduate from Harvard College or Radcliffe College, the chances of their child being Listed are extremely remote. So, parents (and child) should just let it go!

Same, @JulieBurns. Today has not been the best of days, but I just want this to be over with.

@TheCrimsonBulldog I’m actually incredibly happy with where I’m ending up…just want to finally be 100% yk. Hope everything works out for you

Well, UPenn 2021 for me then!

Re: the z-list: Harvard already encourages admitted students to consider taking a gap year before enrolling at the college. I imagine that encouragement will be even stronger this year. If they are successful in getting some students to delay matriculation, it may well affect the z-list too. That said, the z-list is not for the rank and file. Those admitted this way tend to come from wealthy, powerfully connected families.

I wonder if Malia Obama’s membership in the class of 2021 had any effect on the higher yield.

So are they officially not accepting any students from the waitlist?

@3girls3cats - I was wondering that too. I would expect it was taken into account when predicting yield and the number of students to admit. But perhaps they underestimated the effect!

@ccash17: See post 192 for what Harvard is officially saying regarding this year’s waitlist. It’s over (sorry).

Lmao I’m in a college group me chat and one kid said his best friend just got off the waitlist at Harvard today #plottwist

@Garybarry I would not be surprised. they may officially say they are not taking anyone, but I have a suspicion that there will be a few kids taken in for one reason or another. Just a hunch
