Harvard Interview

martini: where did you find those numbers? ...i didn't think we had the exact figures...

When Harvard was accepting ~50-55 students, which another interviewer has claimed to be the preliminary targeted number this year, accepted students were saying that roughly half of them were interviewed. Hanna, who used to work in the admissions office said that between 200 and 300 are interviewed each year. This is how I gather that the acceptance rate of interviewed students is about 10%.

Btw, apparently Harvard doesn't realease decisions early upon request contrary to what some people claimed last year.

and, of course, harvard is probably THE last school to announce anything.

I wonder why that is...maybe they hope that the strong applicants, who never considered harvard as their first choice, will withdraw their applications when accepted into yale, columbia, georgetown, etc...narrowing harvard's list of potential admits, making the adcom's decision easier...

maybe this is the reason why nearly all those admitted to harvard as trasnfers choose to attend.

I don't know about the numbers but an interview has always registered as "you're on the fringe" in my mind. I'm not an applicant but know people who are trying to transfer. Two girls tried last year, both got interviews, both got permanently waitlisted (which I think is awful...they just don't ever get back to you...)
Another guy I knew from the year before tried, also got interviewed and waitlisted. I mean, generally I like to think positively but this is one case where you really shouldn't count your chickens before they hatch.

Thank you! I've been saying that forever.

at least you're not an auto-deny :-P

Are the Harvard interviews similar to Georgetown's (atleast the one I had); in respect that your interviewer will find out your decision before you do?

Martini,

Were you granted an interview?

"granted" -- haha.

Oh, no. My chances for Harvard are slim. If I would have gotten an iterview though, I would have felt like I had been waitlisted already. I don't mean to discourage anyone... I just have my own convictions when it comes to transferring, and they apparently differ from the ones maintained by the CC majority.

Janel: I was thinking the same thing.

i guess there are probably a variety of reasons why people are interviewed. maybe thats why some people got notification emails from harvard and others didn't. for some, maybe its because they are "on the fringe" and for others maybe the committee wants to make sure the applicant's personality fits with their projected image from their application... or to make sure they have a personality outside of amazing scores, etc. i'm just speculating... but i see a lot of benefits of having an interview as another aspect to consider... there are just so many strong applicants, it must be such a tough job!

Did you get a Yale interview?

i don't think yale does interviews...

some people on cc claimed having received interviews from yale. rather than traditional college interviews, though, they seem to say that they are done on campus aand in much smaller numbers, as a way for sure-admits to ask questions/visit campus, etc, if they are not already familiar with yale.

i don't think getting an interview means being waitlisted. i think it's a good thing even though it's not a bad thing if you don't get one

I'm applying as trasfer to Harvard.

I was waitlisted and had interview when I was applying as undergrad.
I haven't had interview for the transfer so far, do I still have any chances? (I am an international student)

Nesta_13, you mean you were waitlisted and had interview when you applied for freshman admission?

generally if you applied as a freshman and had a strong interview and have a strong transfer application...they probably wouldn't have much of a need for interviewing you again. and seeing as it is now may 8, i don't think they will be requesting an interview from you..

atanas_vs, yes I had interview and I was on the waiting list when I applied as undergard. And I was not offered an interview at this point...
