Just an FYI: “Ivy Day” has shifted over time – I didn’t know that. While going through some items, my wife came across a HS graduation memory book. Inside had my accept letters from Ivies. They were all dated April 14 of that year. And were USPS mailed. I rec’d mailed acceptance packages on that Thursday and Friday — thus it must have been April 18 and April 19! I recall the reply-to date was May 3rd or something. Wow!
@T26E4 : It is such a surprising thing that so much has changed over the past few years. Now decisions are available online to make it easier for students. Competitions have been much tougher nowadays and we (the rising applicants) have to keep up and adapt to the ever-changing world of admission and society we live in. Wow indeed!
When I applied, my Ivies had admit rates of 15-20%. At the time, still the most selective schools extant.
Nothing like the sub 7% rates these days.
I can tell you it was a joy to see the big package sitting in my mailbox coming home from school that Thursday! More were there the next day! Now, you all read your results on a screen. No better or worse, for sure. Just different.
I am sure that the excitement at the time was much more than it is now for a “big” package means acceptance! It must have been quite a thrill! I can’t wait for the next 28 days and no matter what happen, I would be content with what I receive.
@Oddenigma French toast is so delicious haha Just keep hanging in there!!!
Would it hurt in anyway if I tried to get a hint from the interviewer about my status as an applicant, whether I am in the acceptance pile or the rejection pile I mean ?
@hypocrit Will it hurt? Unlikely but the exercise is useless. Interviewers have NO idea (unless they were informed you were a Likely Letter recipient) of your eventual decision. Indeed, they find out several days after the official notification day. You’ll know before he/she does. You might as well ask a stranger on the street, to be frank. Sorry but H plays its cards close to the chest.
Go enjoy your time – you’ve earned it. Don’t worry about the decisions.
@Hypocrit If you are domestic applicant, interviewer will have no idea about your status, but if you are an international, specifically from those countries where interviews are limited, getting an interview is hint that you’re being considered.
Spring Break comin’ up! After that, I’ll finally begin to get notifications from my top choice schools, can’t wait! :)>-
@InfiniteZephyr : same
T26E4. I think when interviewers are notified. In my older son’s case, he recieved a congratulatory phone call the next day from decision date.
@notjoe: that’s cool. For my school, the interviewers are expressly NOT given admit/deny/WL results usually until about 3 days after the official notification date. It’s to ensure that the students clearly have time on their own to find out and the first notice isn’t from an alumni interviewer.
Of course, likely letter recipients are handled differently.
@T26E4, It really was cool. The interviewer was nearly as thrilled as my son. This seemed surprising, since my son told me the interviewer’s demeanor at the interview was a little cool and distant.
@notjoe: you have to understand it on the interviewer’s perspective. He or she is supposed to be the neutral ambassador for Harvard, acting as eyes and ears. However, given the admit rate, it’s well possible that not a single applicant he or she has ever interviewed has been admitted! Interviewers all secretly hope most of their interviewees get in, despite the long odds. You bet he was excited!
@T26E4 ,
Yes, I understand. But when you’re a 17 year-old kid on the interviewee side, it can be a little unnerving. Although my son found it difficult to read his Harvard interviewer, who was a rather proper gentleman, eventually, they had a great time during the interview, which lasted nearly two hours. It was a pleasant experience. Not all his Ivy interviews were so cordial.
Should I be concerned if I haven’t received an interview so far? I’m an international student and Harvard already accepted 2 students from my country.
@dianaDM Depends on which country you’re from?
Did anyone receive an interview in India?
I guess Harvard usually stops rolling out interviews after March 10 or so. I believe getting an interview implies that your application is considered in good regard and that is the only thing that matters. So any lucky people from India?
@kuriosmind Romania
@dianaDM Okay, I’m being honest when I tell you don’t worry. There is probably a very limited (if any) number of Harvard alumni in Romania, and because of the awkward time difference, it’s unlikely for the admission office to set up a Skype interview with you. At least that’s the case for other ivies. Harvard does try to interview most of it’s international accepted students, but for a competitive school like Harvard, most applicants who interview ultimately get rejected anyways, so not getting one won’t affect your chances. It’s out of your control at this point. Just relax and enjoy your last year of hs
