i know a girl applying to harvard with 1200 SAT...does she have any chance at all? i see posts on "scores don't really matter," and then even more on "how do i improve my scores?!" how much scores really count is a gray-area issue, i suppose.

Unless your friend has extraordinary ECs or something else that makes her stand out, then I don't think she has much of a chance with a 1200. Is she an athlete?

nope. i don't really know of any major ECs, either...she does drama, but i don't think she's won any awards or anything... i was completely surprised she's applying.

Well, if you're halfway smart enough to go to elite colleges you should get at least a 1400, considering the SAT measures simple math skills and vocabulary...

1200 should not get into the #1 college in the world unless he/she has some super circumstances.

Is she just a bad test taker? Does she make good grades? Although there are other aspects of a student's application that are indicative of how smart and hard a worker she is, I'm going to have to agree with Duskstamper - the SAT tests basic knowledge, and unless another factor really jumps out at the adcoms, she most likely is not going to be accepted. Hopefully she doesn't have her heart set on it.

Anyone can get in. . .who knows, maybe she will, maybe she won't, but at least she applied; something I've been way too lazy to do.

1200s can get in...if shes a recruited athlete, or legacy with rich parents who donate at least 6 digit,

although if she doesn't have those, its gonna be extremely hard. considering harvard has 40+ varsity sports, the bottom 25% of their SAT range is prolly consists a lotta recruits

the valedictorian of our school got in w/ 1400s and barely any ECs... uh but that's the bare minimum. 1200? Not unless she's got something else that makes her special.

what would you say with 1340 (first and only attempt), 10 page activity report, founding member of national chairty and high school division president, 97th percentile?

I'd say numbers aren't everything and you'd have a great chance of getting in.
I'll reiterate the fact that one of my good friends was accepted early to UPenn with an 1160 on her SAT. Test scores aren't all that matters.

Thanks so much! My parnets were all like you failed so badly on your SATs now you're just wasting applicaiton money :p There's always so pesimistic. I even had to help recover a $1000 fradulent charge to visa since they're like oh we paid already too late :p

elitechance - no college would EVER read a 10 page acitivty report. they say maximum 2 pages, they dont read the rest

1340 is decent but i would retake

"Well, if you're halfway smart enough to go to elite colleges you should get at least a 1400, considering the SAT measures simple math skills and vocabulary"

I absolutely DETEST this statement! I have a 1380 (after three tries) and I am extremely happy with my score. 95%! Remember, some people do not test as well, but that certainly does not make them inferior.
