Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

Someone asked about this thread earlier (I can’t remember who) but here you go:

Literally all I do anymore is take naps. Took a good 4 hour “nap” with like a 10 min break so I can get something to eat then fall back to sleep.

I’m pretty sure Harvard doesnt consider 1st mp grades since at least for me they are averaged with the 2nd marking period to find the final grade. It’s funny that y’all assume that everyone has straight As for this marking period. They know we are seniors and some classes are harder than others. I would be worrying if you had like a C or D. At this point, if Harvard really wants you, I doubt a single B will change their mind

@QueenN22 My life is aggressively napping and then staying awake until 1-3 in the morning.

Hi everybody, i applied SCEA last year and got in! I decided to take a gap year (in Africa) so i will start in the fall with many of you. I remember being SO incredibly nervous at this point last year, i lived on this site.

One night my aunt and uncle came over for dinner and asked me about my applications and i actually vomited (in my mouth). It may have been a rancid taco, but just sayin.

Though it sounds corny, i wish i could envelop you all in a massive hug. Now that i have a little distance from the process, i see that i was much more anxious and miserable during the wait than elatednand ecstatic when i got in (though it was a thrill). Now i just sort of feel H made a massive blunder.

Also,so many people i’ve met since getting in act awfully strangely around me when they find out i got in. I actually watch what i say sometimes to sound more erudite. Often it’s easier to avoid the topic altogether.

Anyway, best of luck to you all. Some of you sound very funny.

Hi everyone! I don’t have the determination to go through all 73 pages… when are we thinking the decisions will be posted? I know last year it was thursday so that means next thursday would be the same as last year. Or am I wrong? Does anyone know the hour and est or pst?

@TLCO99 December 10th at 5 pm EST

@Regurge01 Did you get any of this quarter grade nonsense?

10th at 5pm is what the admissions office has been saying but there is nothing in print yet

@Regurge01 can you give us any insight? did Harvard request grades from your guidance counselor this late? Do you think your interview performance (clearly went well) helped you in the process. Also, do you believe applying SCEA is a clear advantage (above simply the admit rate). Thank you so much for your time, help, and kind words

@pubkid not sure what you’re talking about

Guys! I talked to one of my friends, who is currently at Tufts, and he thinks that Harvard will request grades to make sure we aren’t failing our classes. I guess it would be because many of us signed up for a heavy course load–whether because we genuinely enjoy the classes or to bump up our stats–so adcoms wants to make sure that we aren’t slacking off since we applied with a rather “nice” schedule. (Did that make sense? It did in my head. :)) )
He also said that they should be very forgiving with first quarter grades; they should understand that we’re beyond stressed.

@nsliyromanov unfortunately i have no special insights to share with you. I really am not sure why i got in. I think my grades/scores were in range and i must have sounded authentically engaged in my ECs. Some kids from my class with better scores and more ECS were rejected

Until the SCEA acceptance date has been posted on Harvard’s website, it’s just hearsay.

FWIW: Here’s why I’m skeptical of December 10th: Half of Harvard’s full Admissions Committee are faculty members who have teaching commitments through the last day of Fall term classes, which this year is Thursday, December 3rd. Before students are notified of acceptances, the financial aid office needs to calculate financial aid packages for every accepted student that applied for financial aid. If December 10th is indeed the notification date that would mean Harvard’s full Admissions Committee would need to complete their meetings in only 4 days (Friday 12/4, Saturday 12/5, Sunday 12/6 and Monday 12/7) to give the financial aid committee time to calculate aid on Tuesday 12/8 and Wednesday 12/9. Given the complexity of what’s involved, that just seems like a very compressed time-frame.

My gut feeing is that Harvard will post a date on their website when the Full Admissions Committee has gone through at least half of the students being brought before the full committee. Sometimes an applicant is a slam-dunk and takes less than 10 minutes to review, other applicants may take a half hour, or even an hour. Until the full committee is half-way through they don’t even know the exact timetable.

Until then, everyone should wait for an official notification.

@gibby will we receive an email notification when the date is released?

I think that did happen last year, but I can’t be certain.

@gibby I don’t understand why you allotted time for the financial aid office, I don’t believe they tell you how much financial aid you will receive until later because you still have to file the FAFSA stuff which can’t be done until February. Also, I called the admissions office and they said the decision date is December 10th (although they did say they were aiming for December 10th so I do agree it could change!)

Anyone know about when the official date will be released?

@flautamagica if you are admitted they give you a tentative financial aid package which is why they have you complete the CSS early and send in financials before IDOC is available

@Flautmagicia: That’s the way it works. Students in the SCEA round who have applied for financial aid, and have completed all the paperwork, receive their estimated financial aid package along with their acceptance letter.

FWIW: When my son applied to Yale SCEA four years and was accepted, we received his estimated financial package with his acceptance letter. Ditto for RD applications.
