Harvard Social club: admitting women could increase sexual misconduct

Isn’t this the same reason people gave for not letting women into colleges, or muslim men sometimes give to explain why women need to wear a burqua? There may be a good reason to not admit women, but “cuz we are a bunch of perverts and rapists” is not it.

Ladies and gentleman, I present you with the elite of the elite, the cream of the crop academically, intellectually and socially (at least, I’m sure, in their minds). Our future presidents, Supreme Court justices and CEO’s. . . . a bunch of young men who have just told us that if you put them alone in a room with some equally accomplished young women and some liquor (I think that’s implicit here), they will most likely engage in sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Lovely.

But rape culture is just a myth… 8-|

What year is this?!

From the article: “Cecilia Sanders, a senior who is studying Earth and planetary sciences, called the comments “a really troubling sentiment, and I think it’s a really dangerous idea that Cecilia Sanders, a senior who is studying Earth and planetary sciences, called the comments “a really troubling sentiment, and I think it’s a really dangerous idea that men- and women-identified people can’t be in the same space and behave with equal respect and regard for one another.” can’t be in the same space and behave with equal respect and regard for one another.””

I totally agree with this statement however I have trouble keeping up with the lingo these days. Is this how we are supposed to refer to males and females these days? men- and women-identified people?

The title of the story sounds like straight out of the Daily Mail / the Onion.

"CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Members of the oldest all-male club at Harvard have almost never spoken publicly about the organization since its founding in 1791. This week, that silence was broken when an official with the group, the Porcellian Club, said that admitting women could increase the chances of sexual misconduct.

“Forcing single-gender organizations to accept members of the opposite sex could potentially increase, not decrease, the potential for sexual misconduct,” Charles M. Storey, the president of the club’s alumni group, wrote on Tuesday in a letter to The Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper."

all I can say is WOW… :open_mouth:
unbelievable… :stuck_out_tongue:

these guys cant control themselves if a woman is admitted to their club?
This is the most pathetic, chauvinistic excuse for discrimination I think I have ever read.
They make the Augusta Golf Club look good in comparison.

Harvard should be ashamed it accepts students like this. imho

Read this, and honestly my first thought was that I am glad my kid doesn’t go to Harvard.

^no kidding…

DS was going to apply to H for a Post doc position, but I think this might change his mind…

somewhat related, this powerful spoken word performance just came across my facebook feed:

For the first time in 30 years, a member of the club issues a public statement, and this is the chosen topic. At least these future world leaders are good at picking their battles.

Wow. Great way to put one’s organization’s foot forward.

Incidentally, the Porcellian Club blackballed FDR. When he implemented the New Deal as president, some wealthy Porcellian members unhappy about those policies considered them his revenge for their rejection of him.

My first thought was “you shouldn’t have broken your silence with that”

Please tell me this is not the elite of elites, the cream of the crop because if it is, we’re in trouble.

The Finals Clubs are no part of Harvard who booted them out decades ago. They have very little to do with anything going on there. I only knew one person in my entire four years who even admitted to being a member of one.) Most people had better things to do (and weren’t part of the old money prep school crowd that were mostly getting punched.)

And yes, even Harvard has idiots.

Wondering where the name Porcellian came from. Is it a take on the word porcelain with inferred meaning of white members only club?

To me, the name Porcellian conjures up a pig. Pretty fitting but that’s being mean to pigs which are actually decent creatures.

^^ Oh. I thought it was from “porcine”, to act like a pig…

They have little pig fobs for their keychains.

Honestly, I had imagined that Porcellian was a lot more fun than it seems to be.

According to this theory, Harvard would be a much safer place if we ban all men.
