Harvard Transfer Chances from UChicago

This is for my brother who is a freshmen at UChicago and is finishing his 2nd quarter there. He has maintained a 4.0 with tough courseload. He is an active memebr of a debating society and some literary groups. Also in a frat.

High School Stats:

2390
3 800's on SAT II's
3.59 , tough school, no rank.
Lots of EC's, president of 3 clubs, captain of varsity team

What do you think his chances are?

I dont think he has a really good reason to transfer, just that he wants a more competitive atmosphere, and he wants to take classes by some noted professors at Harvard. (ie Mankiw)

I say go for it....especially if he reads Mankiw's blog...he'd have my vote!

i dont think transfering from chicago to harvard is the way to go into a 'more competitive atmosphere'

Well...he's damn near set lol. UChicago is nearly on the same tier so it would basically be a match for him.

How many sophomores take mankiw's EC10 class... anyone know?

In terms of chances, I think its his spot if he wants it, even though these are just his first quarter grades.

On second thought why transfer? I am sure even Mankiw himself would suggest staying at UChicago.... birthplace of modern free market thought.

Hmmm... I'm not sure if Maniw is worth it. UChicago has an economics department that rivals, if not surpasses, Harvard's. Also, it is not altogether clear how accessible these academic superstars are. In most cases, they are not so much.

i wouldnt transfer. leave uchicago for a more competitive atmosphere? that makes no sense. but since i want to get in, tell him to go ahead and leave, he has a good shot at harvard

lol^

i really think he just wants the prestigous name on his CV.

anyone know how important the reason to transfer is?

and what are some good reasons to transfer?

That's an awful reason to transfer...
And trust me....Uchi's pretty prestigious, at least for people who matter.

Yeah thats what I think.

Anyways, I am just curious, what are some legitimate reasons or what are some reasons that successful transfer applicants have?

I'm not a "succesful" transfer, more like a transfer-in-process, but the reason for me and perhaps for many others is that our current schools are not as well "suited" for our particular major in comparison to the school we are aspiring to transfer into. Obviously each school specializes in a certain field, so transferring to a school that specializes in our major would be a definite plus for our future careers.
For an instance, I'm currently a freshman at Davis, which is terrific for its science and med departments. However, being an econ major, going to a school like UChicago (which is noted for its econ dept) would be more fruitful for me.

Hope it helps

There's also personal reasons. I've read constantly on these forums about people who want to transfer from small liberal arts colleges to bigger universities and vice versa because they don't like their school's particular environment.

Other than that, I'm sure people on these boards are creative enough to make sensible reasons to transfer.

??????????????????
