Harvard Wants Second Interviews? Why?

I'd like to know as well. Is this a traditional part of the admissions process?

I havent been asked to do a second interview? Are you guys getting asked?

My original interviewer said that a second interview is requested when the first interview doesn't reflect an applicant's application... or the committee just wants more info on the applicant.

So i assume you either had a great application and a terrible interview (or vice-versa), or your interviewer highlighted aspects about you that you failed to even mention in your application.

^^ Actually, it may not be that at all. Even if you had an amazing interview, it probably would not make up for a "terrible" application, though yes, it could probably make up for a lackluster app. Another possibility is that your interviewer's comments were contrasting from your recommendations, which seems more likely as you have control over your application and your interview but not necessarily over your recommendation. In any case, it is probably a good sign that they want more information.

The message said that it was only for a specific number of kids in my region. So it's weird. I had a good interview. Funny in my case how I got paired with someone who had no idea about many of the questions I asked, him a scientist, me a business major. But we still talked for an hour and a half about other things. My application should have been alright since Yale took me without an interview. I don't know. Basically, it is good news either in a sense that they want to get to know me better or a chance to redeem myself.

A business major? At Harvard and Yale?

major in economics to go into business. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

A second interview means that at least you're close enough to the admission line to warrant a closer look.

I love the rampant speculation. Alternatively, Harv may merely be cross-checking on the tendencies of some of its interviewers by having them interview the same applicants.

How many threads do you need to feel "special"?

I could be something as mundane as your interviewer never filed the report (got sick, for example, or it got lost). Or they lost it. Go ahead with the interveiw, but don't stress about it.

Could easily be reasons stated above...mundane reason...like 1st interviewer not submitting report. Could be discrepancy in what interviewer said and what was in your apps or what was in a recommendation.

Did you mention to the first interviewer that you had been admitted EA to Yale? They might be trying to find out how likely you are to go to Harvard over Yale.

Do you happen to live on Long Island? Don't know if here are any issues with the Long Island interviewers...but it seems there are a number of 2nd interview of LI kids each year.
