Hi everyone!! So I applied to HYP, but Harvard's my top choice. I honestly will NOT be able to relax/breathe/function until I find out what the final verdict is for those schools, so if you could chance me in the meantime? It would save me some ulcers. Thank you SO much!!

1.Piano--> only for about three years. Accompaniast for choir and drama for two years. Started a free after school program to teach elementary school kids how to play. Won a few local, regional competitions, but nothing major…

2.Bharatanatyam--> this is a classical form of south Indian dance, which I’ve been doing for about ten years. Volunteered with my dance school to help teach the younger girls, (100+ hours) There’s this HUGE debut show in which the dancer solos for up to 6 hours, and its akin to a graduation; it can only be done once the guru decides you’ve mastered everything. I performed my arangatram, (my debut) last year. I’m now working on starting up a class at the rec-center to teach girls bharatanatyam.

3.Swadhayay--> this is similar to a Sunday school, but its not exactly affiliated with Hinduism. (im agnostic) Its based more on philosophy, and on universal ideas of god. I’ve been going my whole life… participated in a few speech competitions.

4.Volleyball--> JV freshman year, V junior and senior year. I LOVE volleyball, but I hate when it’s an organized sport, so I didn’t emphasize this on my app. Volunteered to train freshmen over the summers, about 50 hours.

5.School Activities-->
Academic team – President 1 year, member 3 years
Editor of the Newspaper – entertainment section 1 year, and regular contributor 3 years
Leadership Youth – 2 years (basically help new kids etc) and some related summer things

Volunteering:
1.Hospital – implemented a read to the kids program, and volunteered 250+ hours
2.Library – mostly just to hide amongst the shelves and read, but 50 hours.
3.Food Bank – 75 hours
4.Started a program to regularly send school materials (books, paper, pens) to schools in India after I visited my father’s old school and saw how sad the situation was. trying to expand it while maintaining quality. We fundraised and sent $10,000/+ total worth of help last year to 3 schools.
5.Counseled at camp, 2 summers – 300/+ hours
6.Aforementioned things like dance classes, piano etc.

Summers:

Work Experience:
1.Internship with the nj democrats office, for about 6 months.

Essays: VERY good, if I do say so myself.

Rec’s: above average, but not brilliant. I didn’t have the best relationship with my teachers.

I'm so sorry that you had to read through that hideously long post!!!

you seem to be the typical applicant they might accept. the more you have that sets you apart from the other applicants, the better but you dont have any spectacular achievements that would significantly boost your chances

so basically your chance is around 10%, like all typical applicants

you are a competitive applicant to HYP, being asian (ORM) is probably won’t help. But, your EC’s are amazing. You have a flawless GPA, Great test scores. The chances are reach like every other applicant BUT you have a realistic chance. I might me wrong so don’t take it to heart. For the sake of curiosity what other schools did you apply to?

I say accepted in at least one of them. Best of luck! Amazing stats.

droyd: i was so sure that my dance experience would set me apart!! but i guess it is a little common. thank you for your honesty.

sblogblah: i also applied to rutgers, NYU, UPenn, University of Michigan and Stanford.

Rutgers because i can actually afford that one, and Stanford only because I was curious to see if I would get in. There’s no way my mom would let me go all the way to california.

oh and that reminds me… if it changes anything, I spent 12 years of my life living in California. and I moved 3 times. I doubt that is significant in any way.

nritya, i wanted to say that your dance would’ve set you apart from the other ivy leagues but for HYP it is common, b/c of the amount of asian applicants.

I say you’re in at Rutgers, NYU, University of Michigan. Stanford I say 40% chance and UPenn around 50%.

Wow, you make me feel insignificant.
I know it’s hard not to stress but take some deep breaths. You’re going to get in somewhere fantastic.

I really can’t think of an incomplete or “bad” part of your application. Every aspect has been covered.
Good luck!

bump!
10char

You have above average schools at all the schools you mentioned (even the top Ivies), for a few reasons. For one, your academic track record is flawless, and your test scores (7 SAT II’s!!!) really can’t be much better. Also, you have done TASP, which looks AMAZING to adcoms as it’s only the most dedicated and intelligent people that partake in that summer program. Most TASP graduates get into top schools (and many Ivies)… I suspect that you will too.

hey…i am an Indian and i am into Swadhyay too here in Kolkata…anyways i feel you have a reasonably solid shot at the Ivies and I am sure you will get into at least one if not more… good luck…could you chance me please.?? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/columbia-2013/651794-chance-indian-please.html</a></p>

I’m sure that you’ll get into at least one. With HYP, all the applicants are very similar. Do you know how many students have near perfect test scores and a flawless GPA? Hopefully your dance experience will set you apart.

OP- Why didn’t you take the Math II when taking SAT IIs?

nritya: Under Summer Programs, in the TASP thread, you said you are a soph. are interested in attending TASP next summer. In this thread, you say you have already applied to colleges and have already attended TASP…which is it?

Since we know the OP is probably a soph just trying to glimpse the future, I’ll be totally honest.

Someone who reads like this is a reasonable candidate for these schools, but most likely would not get into any of them.

First, she’s not the val or sal which the vast majority of the unhooked who are accepted are.

Second, she’s an ORM. If she’s from Alaska or N. Dakota, she’ll probably get in. If she’s from NY, MA, CA, CT, NJ or any other over represented state, their quota of Asians from her state will be easily filled with stronger candidates.

Third, she has no outstanding EC’s other than TASP and these 3 schools reject lots of TASPers. And just read this forum to find out how common Indian dance is! There are no state (went, but doesn’t say won) much less the national and international level honors and awards they look for.

So while this is a very strong candidate at other top schools, for HYP not so much.

nritya can you confirm that you are sophomore or senior? it will make a huge difference in chances

Or rather confirm if you indeed have these scores…because you can’t plan on having this flawless of a record.

Please, for my sake and yours, do not be stressed out about getting into HYP for the next two years. Why? Because that would be really depressing. Making a goal of getting into a good school is fine, but making it the entire focus of your life is not good. College is but one facet of your life, remember that there is more that you can and should focus on during your high school career.

Also, this entirely depends on you actually being a sophomore. If you are not, and you do in fact have these scores, then it is perfectly acceptable to fret a little bit about it for the next few. Even then, as you are probably aware our opinions on you getting into HYP are not going to set anything in stone.

wow just looking at these stats blows my mind away. I would say that you will ultimately get into one of the 3 schools.

don’t worry about it; you see seem to be the epitome of a “bright” high schooler. :)
