General Comments :

Quickly looked at last year’s thread, seemed like it came out at 6 pm west coast time on Dec. 15. That being said, good luck everyone! Hoping we all get accepted!

**Decision: Rejected **

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): International Jewish Choir (Leadership, Chamber Choir, Soloist, performed at Carnegie + Met), Lots of Musical Theater, FRC + Vex robotics, Piano for 10 years, Marching Band for 3 years
Job/Work Experience: Worked as a Camp Counselor/Intern at local science camp for 30 hours/week this past summer, tutor a middle school student in math
Volunteer/Community service: Did local program for middle/high school students to learn about environmental areas and do habitat restoration
Summer Activities: Worked
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Why Harvey Mudd I talked about how it was my favorite school by far, and the amazing environment I saw and experienced with personal anecdote (9/10). I chose the essay about how my values influence the problems I want to solve and wrote about how I believe it is important to bring technology to rural areas and countries in order to create a more inclusive society where everyone has equal access and how based on my summer camp experience and working with children how important it is to make sure that STEM is taught from a young age in all parts of the world. (8/10)
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Physics and Robotics Teacher, didn’t see it but I’m guessing it’s about how I participate positively, ask a lot of questions, genuinely interested in learning as much as I can (8/10)
Teacher Rec #2: US History teacher, she really liked me, and I always participated in her class very well, went above and beyond on the major projects, I always want to help other people (9.5 / 10)
Counselor Rec: He probably had to write 100 letters of rec, but I probably interacted with him more than the majority of the people he wrote letters for, so maybe (7.5/10)
Additional Rec: My math teacher who I’ve had for BC and Statistics this year, she also likes me and knows I perservere, however there was an error in submitting the letters and the physics teacher one went through instead of hers so she sent it through snail mail, but IDK if it went through (9/10).

Other: I did an alumni interview that went really well. I took as many classes as possible throughout high school (No free periods + extracurriculars through school) since I want to do as much as possible, probably have the most credits completed out of my graduating class.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Unsure, probably CS or Engineering
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, very competitive, in Silicon Valley, about 550 students in class
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 150k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores, Interview, Extracurriculars
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I guess my low GPA cancelled out everything else, I thought that my unique set of extracurriculars would help set me apart but clearly it didn’t.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted to CO School of Mines
Haven’t heard back from anywhere else

General Comments: I’m still a bit disappointed. I thought I did everything possible to show that I was a strong applicant. I guess you probably need to have a near-perfect GPA to make it in. 2 other people from my school also did ED and were rejected, but about 20 more are doing RD. I thought Harvey Mudd was definitely the perfect school for me, but unfortunately it didn’t work out. I hope this information helps future applicants get in!

**Decision: Rejected **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown):1560, 800 math, 760 reading writing
ACT (breakdown): 36, 34 reading, 36 everywhere else
SAT II: 800 Math II, 790 Physics
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0):4.0
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 of 555
AP (place score in parenthesis): Macroeconomics (5), US Government (5), Statistics (5)
IB (place score in parenthesis): History SL (6), Math HL, Physics HL, Chemistry HL, English HL, French SL
Senior Year Course Load: Math HL, Physics HL, Chemistry HL, English HL, French SL+ ToK/EE classes
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, AZ Science Olympiad Bronze Medalist

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Science Club 4 years (President), Math Club 4 years (President), Robotics 4 years (Electrical Captain), Varsity Tennis 3 years (Vice-Captain), Varsity Chess 2 years
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: Dental Clinic for the homeless 2 yrs, Tutoring at school for 3 years
Summer Activities: Freshman: Summer @ Brown Number Theory, Sophomore: Calculus at ASU, Junior: Math Program and History at Boston College Experience, wrote a tiny research paper for Math
Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common App (9.5): Prompt 1: Compared myself to an electron, moving from India back to America, loads of people who read it said it was amazing, profound, intricate, well thought of.
Background influencing problems (8.0): wrote about how the stories my grandpa used to tell me helped me grow, I was a little vague about the problems, but who knows…
Why Mudd (8.5): Tried to explain why I loved it so much in terms of the ‘ways of knowing’ that we learn in our IB ToK class. I thought it was pretty nifty, as did some other people, but it may have been a stretch in some parts.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: Physics Teacher + Science Olympiad Coach/ Science Club Sponsor (9): I’ve known him well for all four years of high school, he’s been a great guy, and he seems to enjoy talking to me. I helped students in his physics class, asked questions, and built up a good relationship with him overall. I didn’t read the letter though.
Teacher Rec #2: French Teacher(7): She’s known me for two years, I’ve been the most active student in her class, I’m good at french, and i enjoy the language. She sometimes complains that I take her class too easy, but I don’t think that would have come through on the letter.
Counselor Rec: (9) I know her pretty well, read the letter, talk to her a lot, and I think it was fine overall. It did feel a little impersonal, but I think it got everything through nicely.

Additional Rec: (7) Boston College Math professor: great guy, got to know him very well over six weeks. I asked questions, i was attentive, I did extra work, and I did really well on the tests. He probably was ultra general about it, because six weeks is probably not enough to make an amazing relationship.

Other: Interview on campus, overnight. Went fairly well, nothing fantastic, imo.

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Math/ Math+Physics/ Physics
State (if domestic applicant): Arizona
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Inner city public, IB magnet
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): N/A

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, Test Scores, I think my essays we great.
Weaknesses: I have no clue. Maybe recs? Maybe essays? Maybe interview?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m likely in the most competitive race/gender/income bracket, and even though I’m in Arizona, I probably wasn’t good enough to set myself apart or in front of everyone else. This is probably one of the most selective years for Mudd, and I just wasn’t lucky. I’ll post my essays in a few posts below.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: ASU, U of A. Applied UChicago EA.

General Comments : I’m obviously upset, very confused, and very dejected. I really thought Harvey Mudd was the place for me, and I really thought I had a good chance. Congratulations to everyone who got in, you all deserve it as you must be fantastically talented people. I’ll be fine anywhere I land, but Mudd really was the dream. Good luck to everybody next year, hopefully you have it a little easier.

I’m sorry that you didn’t get in. You sound like a very hard working, intelligent, and kind person. I’m sure that you will get into many great schools and will do well wherever you land. Good luck in the rest of your search.

Thank you so much! It feels great to hear that. Good luck to your son!

test

Decision: Accepted

Objective:

SAT I (breakdown): N/A
ACT (breakdown): 34, 35 superscored
SAT II: 800 Math, 710 Chemistry
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): Converted, around a 3.6 unweighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A… guessing I was in the top 25-30th percentile
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: English, Calculus, Genetics (Intro and Molecular), History, Religion (Social Ethics), Advanced Chemistry, Sports Science, Health, Varsity Swimming
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): N/A

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity Swimming (Co-Captain), Student Council (Senior Class President, Secretary, Grade Rep), Wildlife & Conservation Club (Co-Head), Ceramics Empty Bowls Club (Co-Head), Stage Band, International Student Orientation (Leader), Relay for Life Planning Committee. Outside of school, Church / Soup Kitchen (Volunteer), Local Supermarket (Line Chef / Server).
Job/Work Experience: Line Chef and Server at a supermarket, Ceramics Studio Proctor, Lifeguard.
Volunteer/Community service: Student Council, Wildlife & Conservation Club, Relay for Life, Volunteer Swim Coach in school, Church program (meal prep and service), Music performances at elderly care facilities.
Summer Activities: swimming, cultural and service trip to Costa Rica in 2015, volunteering and working a job.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Probably an 8 or so. Thought they were well-written and showed different sides of me as an applicant/person, but they were not out of this world by any means.
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Between a 9 to 10.

Teacher Rec #1: My Chemistry teacher taught me the whole year and liked me as I led class discussions, willingly explained solutions on the whiteboard, visited her during office hours and did well.
Teacher Rec #2: I had my English teacher in the spring-- she noticed my class presence, enjoyed my essays and appreciated the effort I put into the class. Both teachers were fond of me.
Counselor Rec: He was not the most helpful throughout the application process and we are not that close. However, I know he wrote a decent rec for me.
Additional Rec: N/A

Other: I interviewed on campus during the summer. It went very well; it seemed more like a genuine conversation than a tense interview.

Applied for Financial Aid?: No
Intended Major: Engineering or Math/CS
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country (if international applicant): Canada
School Type: Prep school
Ethnicity: W/A
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: >$150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): “Recruited” athlete

Reflection:

Strengths: My swimming hook, extracurriculars, ACT & Math II scores (though for Mudd they are not that extraordinary), possibly my essays.
Weaknesses: Without a doubt, my GPA (I am proof that a 4.0 is not required to gain admission to a place like HMC!) and Chem SAT II score.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My swimming, along with my academic course-load from a tough HS and my EC’s. I also showed demonstrated interest (applied last year, was waitlisted, applied again in the ED1 round during my current gap year).
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere, applied ED1 to Mudd.

General Comments:

First of all, congrats to everyone who was admitted to Harvey Mudd, and for those that were deferred or rejected, I am sorry. I was in your shoes last year and I know it sucks. Work hard on those RD essays and trust yourselves for everything you have accomplished. Don’t compare yourselves with others; it can be toxic and stressful. There are so many great colleges and I am sure you will do well at the one you ultimately enroll at.

I am surprised and blessed to have been admitted to such an amazing school. Not only am I an international student, but my UW GPA was low (with a Junior year downward trend) and my Chem SAT II was not the best. I did attend a difficult HS, which contributed to my relatively subpar grades.

That being said, my advice to future applicants considering Mudd / any highly-ranked school would be to find your spike or niche. It can be anything: academics, a music talent, your background… for me, it was swimming. I was able to have support from the coach that likely pushed my application into the ‘accepted’ pile. Find something you can excel at and bring that passion to whatever university you end up attending.

I have read countless College Confidential threads over the years and cannot believe the time has finally come for me to sign off with a post like this. If anyone has any questions or comments about what I have written, feel free to shoot me a PM. Best of luck.

Cheers!

@CCThunderfin Congratulations! And thank you for following up.
