I'm trying to cancel my housing contract before winter starts (so I can move out to a cheaper apartment - my mom got laid off this month). I talked to housing about it, but the process is so unnecessarily tedious. And $400 cancellation fee? Friggin outrageous...

So anyone?
Tips or advice? (As in how to win the appeal for cancelling?)

You will win, especially if you cannot pay. As you can see by the 400 dollar cancellation fee, they want to nickel and dime your ass to death (I wanted to downgrade my meal plan, but didn’t have the heart to fork over 25 bucks, BASTARDS!). Just write a letter and include something showing your mom’s termination/loss of income and you should win… although I recommed saying you will live at home or something and make it the situation more desperate than it actually is.

Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.
My parents’ house is 400 miles from UCLA… but I’ll take your advice and tell them I’ll live with relatives around here or something.

and DITTO about the meal plan! I find it outrageous that the difference of a Premier and non-Premier meal plan is almost $400 in difference too. Grrrrr

Yeah, $400 dollar cancellation fee… it’s outrageous.
At the middle of this Fall quarter I had a financial emergency and ended up having to take the quarter off. I went to cancel my housing but with all the fees and everything, I decided it wasn’t gonna be worth it if I’m going back next quarter. I heard it’s a nightmare to go apartment hunting in a really short notice.
