Has anyone ever appealed a college decision?

I recently got denied from Virginia Tech. I was wondering if I should appeal. It says i have to present new information. Since my application I have joined my clubs, become president of 2, and played 1 new varsity sport. I emailed Tech and they told me the main reason for my denial was a D is received in English. Since then I have an A and my teacher can write a recommendation for me. I dont know how much this will help, but I am also planning on including a personal letter telling them why i got a D in English. My parents were pressuring me to become a doctor (typical asian parents) but i want to go to business. I was depressed and my grade suffered as i had no motivation. Since then i have talked/argued it out with my parents and now want to major in business. I dont know how well this will work but it is worth a shot.

That sound like a solid appeal, go for it!

You say that getting a ‘D’ was the main reason. What were their other reasons? The lack of extra curriculars? Is that why you hustled and joined some clubs and a varsity sport? If the latter is true, I doubt they will consider joining at the last minute the type of commitment they are looking for. On the other hand, if the D was their deal breaker in your application, then you have done a good job getting your grade back up and they just might view that positively. The take-away I have gotten out of all college admissions officer talks is that Colleges want students to be genuine. Therefore a genuine appeal, revealing the trouble you were having and showing your ability to get your grade back up, just might work.

I am wondering if it might be better if the appeal comes from a school official, such as your college counselor (or the equivalent at your school). I know at my son’s school, when a student has something that needs further explanation, the college guidance counselor will sometimes reach out to the college with an email or phone call to go to bat for them.

But the main thing to keep in mind in your dealings with everyone involved in your plea… Be honest, genuine, and real… But don’t blame your parents…(don’t bring up the Asian thing or that they wanted you to be a Doctor–colleges know kids have all kinds of difficulties/depressive periods/etc and they understand how this can cause blips in the records of even the brightest kids). And make sure they know again why you want VT–not because it is the ‘best’ for your intended major–but because it will be the best ‘fit’ for you. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I guess i am just going to appeal just to see what happens

Has anyone else ever appealed

I know someone who appealed a denial and got it reversed - but in her situation it was because the college felt that her original application was a “ghost application.” I applaud you for fighting the denial, especially if it was because you got a D and now have gotten that grade up. But do NOT say anything about the “Asian/parents wanting you to be a doctor” thing… that just sounds so whiny and would undoubtedly come across poorly…
