For the past several years I have been keeping a record of all scholarships won by our local students. Last year, by obtaining lists of scholarship recipients from the various local high schools' senior awards nights, I was able to compile a list of "winable scholarships" for current high school students. Suggest high school students check out their own schools for lists of the same.

I think FastWeb is a nice jumping off point, as it has a lot of different types of scholarships. Just go for them, because some people NEVER apply for. For example, I am applying for a Best Buy scholarship, and they give out 2 $1000 awards from each store in the US. I think I may get it, because no one else knows about it. Some are hard to get, some are stupid, but someone has to win, so why not you?

Best Buy scholarship is a good one that is won every year by students from our high school. Actually there is a $2000 scholarship and a $1000 scholarship given out by each store but you have to have a worthwhile community service project. D won the $2000 scholarship last year for her project as well as one from Comcast.

won $ from a few that I found on FastWeb...Voice of Democracy, FRA, Best Buy, all had awards at the local level and could be found elsewhere but it is an OK place to start.

Nope never won anything and I applied to about 20ish scholarships.

I think the best bet is the local scholarships floating around where you live. Those are somewhat easier to get. I already won $2925 off of local ones :)

My D applied to 14 fast web scholarships as high school senior, won three = Horatio Alger and Sam Walton (Walmart), And Reading for Blind & Dylexic. Came to around $5,000. It was worth it.

Our problem was the high school guidance office got tired of sending the recommendations and we had to pay for transcripts. So a "Blitz" - applying for everything possible - is a burden on your school and people providing recommendations.

I won 1 scholarship from fast web (for 10 thousand dollars), and was a finalist for another. i probably applied to about 10 or so. there is hope, but you just have to carefully choose which ones you apply for. if you apply to random ones just to apply for more scholarships, they chances are probably a lot more slim than if you apply to a scholarship that's cause really influences you or something.

The trouble with Fastweb is that there are a lot of scholarships on there that anyone can apply for... and they do.

If you are going to use it, it's best to go for the ones that you are qualified for and clearly not very many other people will be, whether because of geography, race, national heritage, parents' job, whatever. Even though they might be for less money, they are the ones you have the most chance of winning, so at least you may end up with something.

Son got a $10,000 through fastweb and applied to some others that he had good potential to get but did not. I think it is a good place to start looking when searching for scholarships. It also helps that they have the calendar so that you can keep track of deadlines easier.

Yeah. I like to know too. Each month, I apply for more than 5 scholarships through Fastweb. I have been using Fastweb for 2 years, I have not even won a single 500 scholarship. I will be spending weeks preparing for each essay. What a waste of time.

To find local scholarships, google a high school in your area. Then, go to their scholarship page. There, you will find many scholarships. For instance, if you live in Florida, type "Palm Springs High School + scholarships" into a google search engine. Some of my most treasured scholarships were found through this method. It's a little tedious, but it's worth it.

Fastweb listed the Mercedes Benz Drive Your Future scholarship which is a $10,000 one...my son got this. I believe there were 60 something winners. It is paid at 2,500 each year but is renewable for four years. Fastweb lists many scholarships that you could find elsewhere but if you are new to this then you may not know about all the different ones like Best Buy, Lowes, Target, Tylenol, Coke....just to name a few. I agree that there is a much better chance at getting local scholarships than the national ones but it does not hurt to try and you might be pleasantly surprised like we were. Good luck to all!
