Just out of curiosity, has anyone on CC won scholarships that they found through Fastweb, or any other scholarship searches?

My S is an entering college freshman and he aggressively went after national scholarships over the past year from fastweb but was not successful. Best Buy, Sam Walton, Elks, Simon, you name it. He put a lot of work into it, when in fact it may be luck above all else for the students who prevail. I mean, let’s face it, the vast majority of students applying are very, very qualified to start with. Something in their app catches an evaluator’s eye, and the rest is history. Even after having a very high ACT, stellar grades, hundreds and hundreds of community service hours, club and leadership activity, excellent evaluations, my S came up empty. If you take the plunge, I would caution you not to sink a lot of time into it; believe me, it’s needle-in-a-haystack territory. It is best to research local/state scholarship opportunities. The amounts are lower, but you stand a better chance.

Yeah, I found the KFC Scholars through Fastweb and I won it :).

I only applied to 2 national scholarships (KFC and Lowes) and I won one. My grades are not anything SPECTACULAR, but I had a high ACT score. I also started a nonprofit basketball league that I devoted my life to basically.

Yeah, Im spending time, but not as much time devoted to my studies. Im trying to find a directory of State and Local Scholarships, where would I be able to find that?

I used Fastweb for scholarships as well as my various career centers at my hs and others schools in my area. I won two scholarships that I found on Fastweb as well as a few others from the local listings. I spent the summer of my junior year writing my essays. My senior year, I was able to send out several applications using the biographical essay and four other essays that I was able to craft from the bio and submit… since most ask a variation of the same questions.
