I have been looking into it. I am interested in business-marketing,advertising,public realtions. DePaul looks nice, i have a few q's if anyone can answer

1) Is it a commuter school? I'm coming from new england to chicago, and would not go home a lot

2) Do they give scholorships? it looks pricy

3) How is the business program, internships, etc?

4) Is it a good study abroad program?

5) the website says it has 40 acres, so there is an actual campus?

a little info about me

-3.0 GPA, 4.36 QPA
-21 on ACT and 1450 on reading/writing/math SAT (plan to take both again next month)
-Many E.C.'s-clubs, volunteering, job

I’ve never heard of it, but based on its profile on collegeboard, you’re boarding being in the range for your ACT and SAT. If you take them again, I’m sure you have a great chance! Best of luck.

Yes, I’m familiar with it. I believe it’s the largest Catholic university in the US. It’s Vincentian.

Your ACT 21 is in the bottom quartile for the school, so acceptance is iffy.

Since your test scores are low, you really can’t expect scholarships from this school. Scholarships are offered to students who have high stats so that they will choose a particular school. Students usually have to have scores well within the top quartile of the school. For DePaul, that would be somewhere above an ACT 28. For big scholarships, an ACT would probably have to be around an ACT 32+.

You need to ask your parents how much they will pay each year for college. That will largely determine where you should apply.

But to answer your questions…

Yes it has a real campus, yes it has study abroad. I don’t know about it’s B-school. It’s not a commuter school, altho some kids probably do commute.

DePaul is big in the Chicago region, they have great internships as I stated earlier. Their Lincoln Park Campus is a vibrant residential community, while their downtown campus is close to many Fortune 500 companies. DePaul’s b-school is one of the Top 40 undergraduate programs according to BusinessWeek.

DePaul’s B-school is extremely well respected in Chicago. All of the big accounting/consulting firms, banks and large companies recruit on campus.

It’s well regarded in the Chicago area. Grads from there have no problems getting jobs. The fact that it’s little known elsewhere is irrelevant if you’re happy with staying in Chicago.

1) Is it a commuter school? I’m coming from new england to chicago, and would not go home a lot

It is not a commuter school. Most of the students live within a couple of blocks of the Lincoln Park campus. There are events on campus in the evenings and weekends that the students attend. This is a school where “lives off campus” has a different meaning than at most schools.

2) Do they give scholorships? it looks pricy

Yes, there are academic and service (volunteer) scholarships as well as need based aid.

3) How is the business program, internships, etc?

Good internships in general - big network of alumni in Chicago area.

4) Is it a good study abroad program?

Yes - we visited on Nov 2 and asked about it.

5) the website says it has 40 acres, so there is an actual campus?

The Lincoln Park campus is nice but not huge. Look at the maps or look at it on Google Earth.

The “Downtown campus” is a few tall buildings.

Everyone who we know who has gone there has liked it a lot.

By the way, my son’s friend is a freshman there and she likes her dorm (Seton Hall). She’s in honors but did not choose to live in honors housing. She said the honors housing is nice there, too. (A lot of the freshmen live on campus but I think most of the upper classmen move to apartments across the street from campus.)

i am planning on taking both the SAT and ACT next month. Can i send my current scoresa and if i do better (which i am plannin gon) send the new ones?

Check DePaul’s undergraduate housing availability description carefully. DePaul probably guarantees housing for freshmen only. Immediate neighborhoods are high-rent districts (Lincoln Park/DePaul/Old Town/Gold Coast) where students are competing with young professionals for housing and rents are expensive. Not all landlords will rent to college students, so available housing can be relatively rundown. Read Student Review sites regarding DePaul’s campus life to get a better picture.

my mom is only paying about $15,000- $20,000 for my tuition. The rest i will may through loans and hopefully some scholorships. *

You will be limited to the following amounts for federal student loans…

frosh year - 5500
soph - 6500
jr - 7500
sr -7500

So, if your mom will pay $15-20k per year, and you borrow $5500 for freshman year, that gives you about $20-25k per year to spend. That is going to limit where you can go.

As for scholarships…you cannot count on scholarships to help pay for college. They are very hard to get, usually need high stats, are for smallish amounts, and are often for only ONE YEAR.

I’ve heard of all those schools. If you are a NY resident, then those schools will be affordable. If you are a NY resident, I suggest that you apply to more SUNYs…especially ones that will accept your ACT score. I doubt Scranton and DePaul will be affordable.
