Has anyone HEARD of Washington and Jefferson?

I want to be a doctor down the road, and I've recently been looking into schools that might be less academically challenging, but are slightly less expensive than what I started looking at. I saw that the Fiske Guide to Colleges stated that Washington and Jefferson College has one of the highest rates of students being admitted to medical school. Does anyone know anything about it?

I have heard of Washington and Jefferson --- actually, I had occaison to interview the head of their science department for a project on science education. They do seem to have a strong science program and yes, it is true that they do a very good job of getting their students into medical school. I can't remember the exact percentage off-hand but it was significantly above the national average and was even more remarkable in light of the fact that W&J starts off with students with lower stats than schools more well-known for pre-med. My sense was that they do a lot of work to help prepare students for the MCATs and to get through the pre-med curriculum so that they are ready to get into med school. It sounded like a very nice smaller school and deserves more investigation.

wow! that's really helpful. thanks a lot!

I know someone who D graduated from W & J and was happy there-she was not pre-med.

Isn't that that school out in the Pittsburgh area? I've heard of it, but all I know about it is it's pretty politically conservative, then I stopped listening (heh...)

that was really helpful, I'm also looking for good pre-med schools, any others on your list?

You might be interested in Juniata College.

I am very familiar with W&J. It is a very nice little school outside of Pittsburgh with a nurturing atmosphere. I have had it described as a college in the skin of a prep school. There are a number of small private schools around Pittsburgh like that, the best known being Allegheny College. There is Westminster College, Grove City, St Vincents. If you cross the Ohio line Wittenberg, Wooster, Denison, Ohio Wesleyan are all great choices. As you move east from Pittsburgh there is Juniata, Susquehanna, Ursinus, some other very nice schools. I can recommend them all.
