My son applied to the business school at the university of Washington, but the letter of acceptance said:
Your requested the following major: Business Administration in the Foster School of Business. Your assigned major: Pre Major(Arts & Science) in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Does this mean he will go to the major of Business Administration in the Foster School of Business after the first year in Arts & Science? Any response
is highly welcome!
My daughter was accepted today direct admit. I believe your son has to apply again after his freshman year.
I believe he will need to apply through Standard Admission after earning at least 60 credits. Approx. 30-50% of applicants (including transfers from other schools) are admitted through standard admission. So it’s not automatic for him to be in the major. I think they require a writing test as well. My friend’s D didn’t get DA but was admitted after sophomore year.
I have a question on the notification of direct admit based on your daughters acceptance. My son was accepted to UWA and requested Business as his major. His freshman acceptance has Foster Business as his major but doesn’t say “Direct Admit”, is it safe to assume that designated major means he’s direct admit to fosters? There is no mention of U WA arts and Science major. Thanks and sorry if this is a silly question.
@Laxdad93: Yes, your son has been admitted to the Foster School of Business.
Are you willing to share his stats ? Or at least a range ?
@Laxdad93 When my D said she was accepted into Foster but the acceptance doesn’t say “Direct Admit”, I had to read it myself too to make sure. This is what it says:
“You requested following major: Business Administration in the Foster School of Business
Your assigned major: Business Administration in the Foster School of Business”
Hope this clarifies.
My son was admitted to Foster as an incoming freshman. His GPA is 3.74 and SAT of 1370. Ours did not say “Direct Admit” either just that his assigned major is Business Administration in the Foster School of Business.
You said “was admitted after sophomore year”, why not after freshman year? It sounds confusing to me.
Generally how many years for a non-direct admission student to enter the Foster School of Business to study the major of business?
@mesosere
I don’t know specifics of my friend’s daughter but I found this on the Foster Standard Admission website:
“To be eligible to apply to the Foster School of Business, a student must, at the time of application, have:
- a total of at least 60 graded college credits from UW and/or other accredited colleges and universities.
- a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA for all college credits, including transfer credits. Because UW does not allow forgiveness for repeated courses, GPAs are recalculated with repeated courses included.
- a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA for all of the following:
- all business course credits, including transfer credits
- all UW credits
- all UW business course (prefix courses include: ACCTG, BA, BCMU, MGMT, MKTG, QMETH, etc.) credits
- at least a 3 Writing Skills Assessment score”
If I understand it correctly, you won’t be able to apply to the program in your freshman year as you must have at least 60 credits. So you need to be at least sophomore standing to apply, and enter Foster as a junior.
I also found this (click on Undergrad tab). It has more info about prerequisite courses.

I think how many years it will take to finish the program depends on how many relevant credits you have at the time you enter the program, your option of study, study abroad, etc. This website may help you to figure it out.

I would like to thank all the friends above for their replies.
