Hi guys, I’m planning on taking BIS101 for my minor in Quantitative Biology. And I’m going to take BIS2A this fall (I’ll be a sophomore), and then take BIS101 the following winter. An advisor told me that the chem prerequisite (8AB or 118AB if I remember correctly) do not really help the course that much, so I’m thinking of just skipping them along with BIS2B and 2C.

Do the professors actually have a way of checking everybody’s prereqs? Have you tried to take a course before completing its prereqs and how did that turn out? Nothing happened or did you get dropped from the course?

My roommate took NPB 101 without taking any of the pre-reqs, and I’m taking PSC 101 right now without having taken the prerequisite PSC 41 (though I have taken PSC 1). Some classes check for prerequisites (like the BIS 2ABC series; I took the equivalent of BIS 2A at community college and when I took BIS 2B, the head TA asked me to email her a copy of my unofficial transcript from my community college proving that I had taken the equivalent of BIS 2A).

BIS 2A deals more with biology at the cellular level, while BIS 2B deals with evolution and ecology and BIS 2C deals with phylogeny; in other words, BIS 2B and 2C will prepare you more for BIS 101 than BIS 2A does, especially since BIS 101 deals with Mendelian genetics.

Additionally, if you don’t have a grasp on statistics, you might have trouble in BIS 101. For example, in chapter 2 of the textbook that my professor is using, it covers Chi-Square Test.
