Is there anyone here who has taken a PULSE course and could describe it a little bit more? It looks so interesting but I also wonder how freshman fit in the 12 hours of volunteer work on top of their classes. I would love to hear more about it.
My D was in teh PULSE program as a Soph. She loved it.
The way it works is that you get credit for a total of four courses. The faculty know that you are also doing community service, so you essentially get two classes worth of academic work and credit for two community service classes. But it’s one consolidated grade per semester times 2.
As a parent, not sure I’d recommend it for a Frosh. Better to get comfortable with the transition to college, and fulfill some first year courses towards your major or Core, such as Calc, Chem, English, Foreign Language, History and the like.
btw: many folks use these two Phil courses as a springboard to double major in Philosophy. (PL is a popular double at BC.)
@bluebayou Thank you! I don’t know why thought it was a freshman thing, maybe because it covers core classes so I just assumed they would get those out of the way early. I think it looks like such a cool program.
not saying its not open to Frosh now – it was targeted towards Sophs a few years back when my D took it, but then the curriculum has changed a little bit.
