OK so i registered for my classes last week at orientation and I was one of the few freshmen to get chosen for PULSE. I really like the program and it seems like a great opportunity, but now i’m a little hesitant. I really want to take the class but im wondering if it would be a good idea to take it as a freshman because its a big time commitment and i’ll be just adjusting to the school. I’m afraid of being away from campus so much as a freshman when im trying to meet new people. If i didnt take it this year, i would definately take it next year. Should i wait to take it as a sophomore when i know the school/city better or take it this coming year as a freshman? Thanks!

Dear Collegebound911 : The more you stay engaged and involved in your freshman year, the more you will find that Boston College is a wonderful place and the more you will meet engaging conversation partners (tip of my hat there of Fr. Hymes). Each school week is 168 hours long - you are in class for typically 15 hours, perhaps a shade more or less. That leaves many down hours across the board where boredom and dissatisfaction can gather. Push the envelope on the Pulse program and see where the experience leads you. Boston College does not set up students for failure.

the only caveat I would make is that if you are a science major and have enrolled in the Chem/Bio/Calc sequence, which includes Chem labs, you might think twice about adding the PULSE service component. Chem lab is three class hours, but only one unit, and to receive an A, will require more work than most of your non-science classes.
