Has your child finished submitting college apps?

Ha Ha Ha... finished? DS has transformed into someone I have never met before! He was so motivated and 100% on top of everything until the last two months and now forget it. He is applying to 12 schools and has only pressed submit on one EA application (thank goodness) but missed out on the other because he just wasn't ready w/ the common app essay. Nov 15th is deadline for another (a real potential "match") and he still hasn't completed the essay. HOWEVER, I looked at myself in the mirror the other day and decided that nothing was worth the scowling lines on my face and the grey hairs popping up.... from now on... I will PRETEND that he is on his own and fret from a distance.

D2 is making me crazy. Two EA's are due this Saturday and she is still waffling on her essay. I am trying to back off. She has been told not to wait until the last minute in case there are problems with the Common App web site.

The ones we can afford (instate public) are done after much fuss and drama. I'm not terribly concerned about her progress on the schools we can't afford.

It was a great laugh!!!!
Finished? By this time last year my daughter chose ~15 schools she was interested in. That's it. By the first week of December she reduced the number to 12 and gave teachers the envelopes. A lot was brewing in December, but no completed apps.
The first application was sent couple days after Christmas, the next 8 or 9 went out by January 1, then one on Jan 2 (Columbia's deadline) and one on Jan 15 (deadline at NYU). A lot of her friends were on the same schedule.
The outcome was just fine
So relax. It's not late.

One EA app in. All that need recommendations/transcripts have been requested and processed. So that leaves two small to mid-sized essays to write along with easy drop-down menus to fill out by end of November. I'm thinking we're in okay shape because we get the entire week of Thanksgiving off.

NONE done so far.

And this is a girl.

I'm not happy.

DD2 is pretty type A and has done 2 of 5, only because both are EA. DD1, two years ago, finished her apps with a week to go (none early).

When my daughter applied, absolutely none of her friends had anything but EA and ED applications done before Thanksgiving. Every single one of them sent in their applications in late December.

Unless the school is rolling decision (when you need to get the ap in as soon as possible), EA or ED, the admissions officers spend most of the fall traveling and don't even start looking at the applications until January.

S decided he wanted to submit ED at one public and EA at 3 privates, plus apply RD for another public. He's done with the 2 public applications, has done 2 of the 3 privates, with one more to go by their Nov 15 deadline. All 3 privates are Common App schools, so he just needs to polish his essay a little and submit the 3rd one, then he's done. The process was actually much more sane than I ever imagined it would be. Note to self: have faith in S, he'll manage just fine.

DD is applying to 7 schools. One was rolling admission completed and accepted. Of the remaining 6 all are going through the common ap. She has completed 4 of the 6 (which are her top picks anyway). All teacher recommendations are in. She needs to complete the 2 remaining supplements (one of which requires 5 short essays because they are test optional UGH!) She WILL have them done by the end of Thanksgiving weekend so then we'll just be waiting.

NONE done for DD2 -- she plans to apply to 4 LAC's -- 1 safety, 1 match, 2 reaches. To be fair, she has been busy with the fall play and her last 3 college visits, and is probably over-thinking her essays. However, even she was embarassed when she had an interview at her match school last Friday and a phone call from the Admissions Officer at her safety school on Monday; both schools had everything from her counselor and teachers, and essentially told her "don't worry about the essay, just submit the application!" She now promises to submit the supplements for those 2 schools this week and get the common app done by the end of Thanksgiving break!

DD had her 18 aps completed and submitted in October. she started in late July with the essays as they became available.

18 !!!!!
Why so many? I'm pushing for D to have a list of no more than 8 when her time comes. Do they need more than, say, 2 reaches, 2 safety's, 4 matches?

S has submitted 2 rolling applications and 4 EA ones. He got the rollings in back in September and has already been accepted to both. He has 2 of his 6 regular admissions applications in and hopes to have the others done by the end of November. I must admit, I did prod him to finish his applications early. He wouldn't have done it without a bit of nagging on my part, but now he's beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and is happy he listened.

DD has an issue with great test scores, not so great grades, very hard curriculum, high AP scores, and she is a senior in her thrd high school, (three states) because her mother and I keep moving, chasing stable employment. And she wants to be an engineer, which shortens the list of possible colleges somewhat.

18 has only 3 real reaches, but it is hard to assess objectively (especially for one's own child) where a "match" has become a reach...hence 18 apps. Two safeties, for sure though.

Reasonabledad:

I'm in awe, if 18 applications were needed as you noted above, that they were all in by October and that your D started in July. Does she have her own self starter button or did you have to keep reminding her? The reason I ask is that I'd like my DS to start on his applications in July, not because I think he'll have 18 apps, but because he he'll have a heavy courseload and two ECs (one a sport) that are time eaters in the fall, which overlays guess what ... application season.
