Hate My Second Major

Hey guys,

So I am a senior right now and am on track to graduate in May. One thing that has been stressing me out lately though is the fact that I hate my Journalism major. Currently I have completed my Classics/Classical Humanities major, have one class to go for my European Studies minor, and three classes to go for Journalism. I know I should probably just finish Journalism out but I really don't find the subject interesting and know by this point that I don't want to be a journalist. I did the program because it was hard to get into (it's a top-5 J-School), I felt like I needed a practical major to accompany Classics, and I also thought it'd keep my options open for the future if I wanted to go into communications or law.

I could a) stick it out for another semester, b) graduate with just Classics and the European Studies minor, or c) do a second major in Philosophy instead, which would mean taking five philosophy classes next semester and one over the summer to complete it.

Any advice is welcome :)

Could you complete a double minor instead? I mean if you only have three journalism classes left, you’ve probably done enough for at least a minor.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to be stuck in school any longer than I had to, so I wouldn’t pick up the new second major. So if I were you, I’d go with A or B.

My school doesn’t offer a Journalism minor, and I don’t want to do a double minor really because I feel like that doesn’t look as strong as a double major and a minor, you know?

If you only have 3 classes left, I don’t see why you can’t just stick it out for one semester, especially if it means you won’t have to stay in school longer.

Thanks for the advice so far. I didn’t mention that I’m planning on either going to law school (I already took the LSAT) or working for a bit then going to law or business school after college, meaning I definitely won’t be needing my journalism major for practical stuff in the future. I personally see the value in humanities majors, but I realize a lot of people don’t and would prefer to see journalism on a resume over classics, which is why I chose journalism in the first place. But I hate it so much that I hardly even apply for journalism internships or anything because I just don’t like the field…which does not boost my resume lol
