Today I just found out that I got a C+ for the year in honors precalculus as a junior. The C+ was a 79.3 so that just enraged me to the extreme. I was able to get an 85 on the final but needed an 87 to get a 79.5. SO right now I am sort of freaking out and I am very upset about the whole ordeal. I was really sick the 3rd quarter of the year and missed over a week of school a week before AP exams. This absolutley killed me!

My question is should I try to retake the course during the summer or is that move too drastic? I have never gotten a C+ on my transcript. I am looking at very competitive schools such as Emory, BC, Wake Forest, and Lehigh. I am afraid that a C+ in math during my junior year may affect my admissions to some of the top ranked schools. I have worked very hard all throughout high school and have done considerably well on som standarized testing.

It wouldnt be as simple as retaking it through the school. I would have to do it through UConn's summer session. It is only a month during the summer but it is m/t/w/th from 1030-1230. I am really torn on what to do. I want to take it and prove it to myself and everyone else (admissions officers) that I am capable of being successful in precalc.

a c+ is not horrible, you might just have to explain ur situation, also try to get a B or higher durring your senior year math class that will look good.

I say you should retake it....but I don't say this because a C+ is such a bad grade. My reasoning is that you're really disappointed with the grade and it obviously isn't the type of grade you normally get, and you have a chance to prove that if you take the class. 4 days a week for a couple hours doesn't seem too bad...

You'll feel a lot better if you finish the summer class with a higher grade, and you'll have the opportunity to show colleges that you have the work ethic and the motivation to push yourself to achieve a goal...and that you have high standards for your academic achievements! (most people would be glad its summer, and would forget about the grade!)

If you do this, you'll know that you've done everything you can possibly do to fix the C+...which has gotta be good for something no matter what college you end up at. And, if the colleges can't appreciate someone who would go through the trouble just to cover a C+...then its their loss ;)

I know that for me personally, I'd be pretty disappointed with myself in spite of the special circumstances, and that I'd definitely take an opportunity to alleviate the issue. I'd say definitely take the summer class to change the grade. You know that you'll feel better about everything when you get the grade you know you're capable of getting.

I had some trouble in precalc this year too, I'm normally a straight A student... I ended up pulling mine up to a B+ the second half of the year, which still frustrates the heck out of me. But I didn't do as well in the beginning in some classes and have thus had to deal with a grade in between the good and the bad for a final, so I understand the frustration of not getting what you'd normally get and after always working so hard, it's a let down.

I'd say if you have something else you would like to do this summer, then consider that, but if you think you have the time and would like to prove to yourself you can do it, which I'm sure you can, then I would maybe try. I don't think one C+ is going to make or break your chances of going to a school you want to go to if they see the rest of your record is impressive and if you do well in the beginning of next year, but if you think you can do, maybe give it a shot.

Maybe call one of the colleges, I called Emory to discuss APs next year (they thought the 5 I'm planning to take was crazy lol), but they were very nice and helpful in discussing what would or wouldn't sway the admissions process, so if you explained the situation, I'm sure they would probably tell you one grade won't effect your chances but they would look highly upon you showing you were motivated to do better...my guess anyway.

My main concern was that the C+ was during junior year in a core subject area. I just didn't want it to affect where i was going to get into.

I realize that taking the class over the summer would obviously look good but is it worth it? Will a C+ affect admissions? I personally think it might? I'm not sure.

It might affect your chances, it might not. But...If you think it might affect your chances, you're likely to blame it for any rejection you may get next year. Better to have no regrets :) Plus, if you're taking AP Calc next year, sounds like you are, maybe it will make math easier for you next year too...

By the way, how much lower is this grade from your other grades? ...that might affect whether you want to retake it.

That C+ will stand out based on your other grades...and, since it does sorta fall into what people would call a "downward trend" in grades...it isn't going to look great...whatever that means, lol.

It is definitely worth retaking. For sure...even a B is worth it...but if you kick some a$$ and get an A in it, it's even more worth it. Go for it! You'll feel good about it.

Thanks I really apperciate the support. I was nervous about that "downward trend" but the only reason i've gotten a b this year was cause i was in AP classes and such (for the first time).

I think I will retake it, even though some may consider me crazy.
