Hi T.E

I really don’t think you’re screwed. Although OSU admissions have gotten slightly more selective (i think) you are by no means an automatic rejection. While your GPA is slightly on the low side, make sure to keep up an upward trend…no more slacking! Colleges definitely like to see an upward trend. Also your extra curriculars look nice…I’d say join the science olympiad team but don’t just be a passive member. Try to get an officer position or something or get some awards (I’m not saying this is easy or necessary, but it would help). Also try to get a decent ACT score (I’d say 25+) and I think you’ll be okay. Btw, i dont think your dad making 44,000 would qualify you as a minority ;-). I may be naive so others can judge as well.

Good luck!

I def agree w/ previous post

You talking about The Ohio State University in Columbus, right? (there’s also Oklahoma State and Oregon State…)

Anyways, in order to be accepted to the main campus as a freshman, you have to make the cut for the Honors or Scholars program, which means 27 ACT (or equivelant SAT) and a Top 20 percent class ranking (although they might be lenient if your school is more rigirous)

As for you’re GPA… It won’t automatically shoot you down. At some schools, that GPA easily places you among the top twenty percent of class members, at other schools where cheating, lackluster classes and rigor pursued by most students, and favoritism toward students on a name basis is rampant (btw, I’m talking about a small Ohio public school, in case you’re wondering why I know so much about OSU or if the above comments sound like your school), then a freakin’ 3.7 barely makes the cut for the top fifth. So, admittance will be in the hands of your classmates.

Also, about raising your GPA to a 3.6… DO THE MATH!!!

If you take a maximum course level and obtain all A’s for senior year, then maybe you can. But by my basic calculations ((3.2x3+4.0)/4), the highest GPA you’ll ever obtain is a 3.4. So unfortunately, It’s highely unlikely.

Also, one last thing… just go to a branch campus for a year while living at home if all fails. Many freshman going to OSU (in fact, probably the majority) attend this way, including many of my fellow classmates from years past. You can complete your prerequisite clases in a smaller, more coddling environment, with many of your future classmates. The next year, you’ll be at the big campus with all your friends you made at the branch campus (admitance to the big campus is basically guaranteed), and all will be good. This is also a great way to save some cash and have an easier transition to college. So, by all means, don’t diss the branches, man!

um im pretty sure to get into the columbus campus you DONT need at least a 27…

Honors appears to be 30+ ACT plus top 10 percent of class.

54% ranked in the top 10% of their graduating classes

Actually you do need a 27 to get to Columbus freshman year. My friend just got rejected from the Columbus campus for engienering this year with a 21, and was told by the admissions department that a 28 ACT was necessary to go to Columbus. Also, I have seen this be the case many times before, since I work in the guidance office for the past couple years of high school, I have seen many of our students go to branch campuses with very decent grades and ACT scores.

However, to another above post, the main rerason the requirements are set is because these are the requirements for the scholars program for almost all degrees at OSU. Again, I am not sure if you can make it on to Columbus with lower scores if you’re going to the agricultural college or one of the other more obscure colleges, but you CANNOT make it to Columbus if you wish to major in Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts, or other, more mainstream majors. You will go to someplace like Newark, Mansfield, or Lima instead.

OHKID, OP has 2 more years to get grades up, not just 1, so a 3.6 is possible.

OP, The GPA is less important than where you end up in the class. Top 10% is your goal. BUT, there are other good state schools in OH that will offer scholarships. Look into some of the others like Wright State. By the time you are a senior your parents may have changed their minds on living at home.

BTW, you THINK your a minority??
