Have I screwed up?

I know this is a bit too early but it's better deal with the problem now I guess.

I am a freshman in HS, and my grades aren't too good right now. I will most likely end up with a 3.0gpa... and the grading quarter ends in about 2weeks, the first grading quarter.

My parents are saying that I have screwed up and I wont get into a good uni, my sister is studying at brown university. I plan on going to somewhat prestigious colleges.
I know I can get a 4.0gpa for the rest this year, and try my hardest to continue it for the rest of my HS years.
Can I still get into good colleges even though I messed up in one quarter? could the ACTs and SATs help, if I do get a great score on those? I'm in robotics club, and key club. I'm doing cross country, and track. I already have a few community hours down.

Do I still have a chance to get into prestigious colleges if I improve, and with all that other stuff?

My parents aren't letting me go to homecoming b/c of this.

-thank you.

YOU’RE FREAKING OUT ABOUT A QUARTER??

I’m a senior, so I know everthing about the trials and tribulations of high school. The purpose of the first quarter of freshman year should be to get used to high school. Don’t worry about the first quarter. Once you learn how much you need to study, how to study, and how to manage your time, you’ll be acing high school in no time. Besides, most colleges don’t really care about freshman year, let alone the first quarter! Your parents are seriously over-reacting. I would hate to have parents that overbearing.

P.S. not every person needs to go to an ivy league school. save your money for graduate school, which is what I’m doing. Instead of me spending 50k per year on a private undergraduate education, I’m going to probably spend 20k going to William & Mary or Purdue so I have no debt going into graduate school.

“I know I can get a 4.0gpa for the rest this year” I would say this is a bit presumptuous. Try not undermine your goals, especially when you’re at a 3.0 now.

The general rule is, 9th grade is not as highly regarded as 10th-11th, but it still affects your GPA and class rank.

Of course you can still get into good colleges, as long as you perform at an exceptional level the next 3 years. Will you be equal in grades to someone who DID put in the effort during 9th grade? Probably not.

High school is a huge adjustment from middle school. Colleges understand that. As long as you continue to get better grades, you’ll be fine.

Also, some colleges like Stanford, I believe, don’t even look at freshman year. still, I would work on improving your extracurriculars as your main goal for high school, because that is what gets you into the prestigious colleges, not your good grades. Granted, you need to have good grades, but ec’s are what separate you from the rest of the crowd. good luck!

Freshman year is irrelevant compared to Junior year.

Yes, you’ve screwed up. Knowing (or thinking you know) you can get a 4.0 and actually getting a 4.0 are two separate things. Some people actually can’t discipline themselves to sit down and do the work. Have you screwed in terms of college admissions? Not yet, but you’re not off to a great start…

A 3.0 isn’t THAT bad, but you do have plenty of time to bring it up. Even if you don’t have a 4.0, you can still get it above a 3.5 assuming you actually sit down and promise yourself to put your nose to the brimstone

It’s a quarter. Chill out and do better. You can get in Ivies still. It’s true.

Do quarters even go on your transcript?

Chill. It’s one quarter. Quarter grades don’t matter in terms of college admissions, only final grades do. Explain this to your parents, and tell them that you’ll try your hardest. But don’t freak out like that.

If you’re school works on a semester system, just kick ass until December, settle for low "A"s if you have to, and you can put it all behind you after Christmas break
