I remember once I asked my bio teacher if there’s anything I could do (this was at the end of the semester), to raise my 89% to a 90% or if she could round up. And this was after I got above 100% on the final too. She said no lol.
Looking back at it (I’m a soph now), I just can’t believe I did that! Have you guys ever done that? My chem teacher this yr will bump a student up if he wants to (a number ending with 9 or even 8).
My calc professor last semester bumped up grades based on improvement, which is great. But I’ve never asked. I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking unless I had a really good relationship with the teacher, in which case I would most likely not need the bump anyway.
I have NEVER asked unless you count the one time I asked a teacher to correct a mark that was mis-entered. I would just feel too awkward about asking for a mark that is higher than what I deserve (especially if that means I end up having a higher mark than someone else who deserves it more).
However, I’m fairly sure I have had my mark bumped on a few occasions where the class average was too low so the teacher curved marks up slightly or where I had a single outlying mark due to extenuating circumstances.
In high school, I only had one teacher bump my grade (other than classes with curves already), but I didn’t ask him. I had been struggling in world history 2 all year, getting a C one quarter, but I worked hard and pass advanced on the sol and was averaging an A- the last quarter. The last day of school, I forgot to bring in some work from when I was absent and that made the difference between a B- and B. Because I had been doing so well and had improved, he just gave me the B.
Honestly, if you want your teachers to mark in your favour - just become the teacher’s pet. Do it subtly, so your class doesn’t hate you when they begin to realise.
No way. I’ve had a few elective teachers that have bumped me because I don’t talk during class, but no “actual” classes. Sometimes my classes do petition(as a whole) for curves though.
I once asked my World History teacher last year if she could give me extra work to do for extra credit to get my 89.4 up to an 89.5 (which would be an A-) and she said no. But for my final grade when I calculated it it should have been an 89 (B+) but when I checked my final report card she had bumped me up to a 90 (A-) cause I worked so hard in her class and was always after school for extra help.
My chemistry teacher mentioned a few times before our semester finals that she refused to bump up anyone’s grades, because, after all, these were the grades we produced from our own work.
My friend had an 89.47 in that class and asked for a bump up to an 89.5, which is an A- in my school. Not surprisingly, my teacher told her she wouldn’t.
I agree with my teacher in that it’s not fair to change someone’s grade unless a wrong score was entered. The grades we get reflect our own work and effort, and so there really is no reason to bump them up.
