Has anyone here ever just gotten lucky on the words they choose in the verbal section? I got a 790, up from a 690, in two months, with no prep (although I did have to read a lot more for history, though none of those words were on the test). I just got lucky and knew most of the words they chose, and guessed really well on the few I didn't know, so basically it was a fluke, which is one of the reasons I'm not taking the SAT again. But were I to take the SAT again and drop 90 points or so in verbal, would adcoms realize it was a fluke?

The real question is: would they care?

I agree that you should not retake. If you did, you would be getting 690 , 790, 700 and that would not be impressive at all.

I didn't mean that you shouldn't retake - I meant that I don't see them really caring about you going down. I mean, a highest score is a highest score, regardless of the fact that it seems to be a fluke. Will they throw out your 790 if you get 700 on the next one? - I don't see that happening. Anyways, how do you know the 790 was the fluke and not the 690?

If your math could use some significant improvement (50+ points), and you are confident that you can make that happen, I would wholeheartedly recommend that you retake.

don't do it. it happened to me, in math, 680 to 800 then back to 690. (hopefully they'll take the 800)
