Having a dog and going through med school

I have a younger dog (almost 2 years) that I got before going back to school full time to ultimately goto med school in a year from August (assuming I get accepted ;)).

For all of you med school vets out there, how feasible is it to have a dog? She is a great dog and I have had her while in graduate school but I am able to do most of my studying from home (although there are 12 hour days where she is on her own). There is no way I can give her up but I just want some opinions on how manageable my situation will be?

Hopefully I get accepted to Michigan where I can live with my family which will obviously make things a lot easier (fam lives in Ann Arbor although I am in an apartment right now).

I imagine it'd be harder schedule-wise than being on your own, but easier than having a kid... :)

I know a lot of people with pets in my class... probably more cats than dogs, as cats are a little bit more self-sufficient, but still a sizable number of dog owners. It's certainly possible, it just makes your schedule a little bit less flexible. If you have to be home at a certain point to let the dog out or walk it, you may have to sacrifice some efficiency. Some people go right home after class anyway.

I guess your housing options might be a little bit more limited as well, but then again, the stress relief that comes from owning a dog might be worth it.
