Having a job while going to school away from home?

I worked through my two years of community college and then during holidays, but now I've transfered and I'm looking into a retail job near my school. When I was at CC I didn't have to worry about being able to come home on breaks because I lived at home. Now one of the things I'm wondering about is being off for, example, spring break and important dates that come up that I'd like to be home for.

I know this is probably just a sacrifice I'll have to deal with, and in the end I'll probably just live with because, well, I need that money!!

Does anyone have experience with working off-campus at school while living away from home? How did scheduling work out for you? What did you do for spring/summer/winter break?

And fyi, working on-campus isn't too appealing to me because you don't get that many hours...plus I've had nothing but bad experience with applying for on-campus jobs and working at my school. I'm not talking about bad as in, I just didn't get the job, but with the way my school handles employment. It's very strange...anyway, it's also spring semester so I imagine a lot of the jobs are already filled up.

I'd appreciate hearing about any experience or advice!
