Having a weird hobby...?

So…as a hobby I have always enjoyed making these wooden toy things that little boys play with, although many adults and grown men play with them. You might not understand, but to put it into context, think about My Little Pony and how that show seems to be geared towards little girls but has a big adult male (bronies) following. It’s similar to that, but on a lesser scale. Do you think this is worth putting on my application? Would colleges see it as unique or lame/weird?

I think it is worth it! Every school I have visited has said that they want you to put everything you do in your free time down. I think something like your toy making skills is something a college would love to see. I also think that something like that could make for an interesting supplementary essay because I think it could really show your creativity/ability to create things.

Even if you putting your hobby on your application won’t do anything, I don’t think it can possibly hurt you.

I think you should call it wood work or something - maybe carpentry or something? Just so that it doesn’t sound weird at first glance. You should also stress that you make these toys for kids and leave out the part about adults and my little pony

I think it would be less weird if you just told us what it is, TBH. :stuck_out_tongue: OP compared it to MLP, not that it IS MLP.

Woodworking / whittling / building / carpentry, whatever you want to call it. It’s not like they’re going to question you about it.

I agree that it sounds like a unique addition to your application, but you should pay attention to how you describe it. “I have always enjoyed making these wooden toy things that little boys play with, although many adults and grown men play with them” doesn’t always give the clearest picture…

Would definitely put it down. Maybe it will help a lot, maybe it won’t. It will definitely make you more memorable to the adcom members, which is more than nothing.

I understand you don’t want to be specific here, but do be specific on the application - the quirky details will be worth more than just saying woodworking or carpentry or whatever.
