OK, so do you think I should bother applying to NYU or Columbia? If my school pays for the applications I might apply anyway just so I have no regrets, but do you think i have a chance? be honest!
Any other suggestions? I want to stay in the North East
The only schools I am definately applying to are the CUNYs (public city schools) and SUNY (state schools) Binghamton and Stony Brook. I don't know where else to apply...
If it matters, I'm either going into medicine or investment banking...

NYU-
No at Sterns. You might get into the college of general studies, considering you're a URM (which is very unfair in my opinion, but is the reality). I'd say a 30% chance there because i hear NYU likes URM and high GPA...although test scores can be important there too...

Columbia - 10% Bring up the SAT 200 points and i think you have a shot, but not at your current standing.

You should get into the SUNYs and CUNYs.

Don't take my word for everything. I'm not very good at factoring in the URM status, so wait for other replies

ur a URM! your chances are pretty good...though you should raise your SAT to >2000...and def. try to get some EC's. Even though you're a URM you still need a 'hook'. But even now i'd say your chances are like 60% for columbia

Thanks for your reply guys. Anything will help.. I'm sure I know less about this than you do. And yea, I know being a URM will help. If I weren't I wouldn't even consider applying because I know I wouldn't get in. I'll definately try to raise my CR score especially. As for ECs, isn't it too late? I might try and do some volunteer work if my work schedule allows it. I guess it's something..

First of all Noel, URM doesn't mean nothing - right or wrong it does factor in.
br9172, I'd say your shots are the following:
Columbia = huge reach/if your sats go up 200 points, I'd say slight reach
NYU= get your SATs up 100 points, I'd say its a match

You might also want to look into other colleges like:
Boston University
U of Maryland

Do you only want to stay in New York? What about Sarah Lawrence?

URM means a great deal. I would have to agree, however, that the scores are still low here. I would go ahead and apply, but I do believe your competition from NY hispanics is stiff.

If you want a top college, you really need to consider schools outside of NY where you will stand a better chance. For medicine, you want to dfocus on a college where you can get a good GPA. For investment banking, you want the biggest name college you can get.

If you tell us where in the Country you're willing to go and what size college and atmosphere you want, we can give suggestions.

I would like to stay in the city because I would be able to live at home and not have to pay for room and board. If not, I would just like to stay in the north east, so that it wouldn't be difficult or expensive for me to go back home to visit. And thank you all for your replies!
