Having too many credits?

Can having too many credits be detrimental when applying to top schools as a transfer student (Cornell, Michigan, Brown, Penn, UVa, etc.)? My current school awarded me a good amount of AP credit, which I'm sure the schools I'm transferring to wouldn't have awarded (e.g. exempt from General Chem with a 4 instead of a 5), and I've overloaded a semester here and there, so I have more credits than I need. Based on credits I'm a junior, but I am actually a sophomore. Does it matter that I have excessive credits? Most schools state that you have to finish the remainder of the degree, at least half of it at the school that you've transferred to. Does this mean I'd just continue to take courses and/or retake some prior ones?

Each college and university decides for itself which AP credits to accept for credit and/or placement. Check the websites of the institutions on your list, and see which (if any) of your APs would count there. It is entirely possible that none of them will.

Likewise, each college and university decides for itself which of your regular courses are acceptable for transfer credit and/or placement. You might lose a whole bunch of those as well.

Pick up the phone. Call the transfer admissions counselor at each place on your list, and get a read on whether or not you are likely to be eligible to apply. They will be able to help you sort through your options.

Agree w/hm1, start with looking at the college websites, B for example:
