Headed to UCSD: Where can I find a single studio? or the like?

So I'm not really digging the whole communal dorm / daily parties that seems like will be day and night at The Village. I also don't want to have to share a room with a roommate or risk that happening if there aren't any singles left (I heard the stories where some people who had doubles to themselves from the start of the year due to early overfilling of singles and lack of a demand for doubles, involuntarily welcomed in a new roommate in their room in the middle of the year. I don't want this at all...I had a miserable 1st-year dorm experience at another school that literally drained my soul.)

Please don't think I'm an outsider/recluse or anything ...I do like to party it up from time to time....I just like my alone time and privacy when I want it and to be able to get away from people when the time calls for it. Hence I also wouldn't want a "rent a room" deal in a private family's home.

So, any of you SD aficionados (and sympathizers) -- any suggestions for what I'm seeking?

In your suggestions:
-What's the monthly rent? I'd love to get the cheapest available (absolute max I'd wanna go is $1400 monthly).
-Frequent shuttles available to campus? If not I guess I wouldn't mind having to walk to campus...
-How far away are amenities? (Proximity to Chipotle?)
-Would it have to be 1-year-lease? If not would the price be any different, for say a 9-month lease?

You’ll be in La Jolla, which is certainly not cheap, but you’ll be able to find something around that range. The only problem I have with UCSD’s off-campus is that there really isn’t anything super close. To the west you have gated residential neighborhoods and to the immediate south you mostly have shopping/business areas. You have to go a couple blocks south until you start hitting heavy residential condos/apartments. You’ll definitely want to grab a shuttle (you get it for free with your UCSD ID) or ride a bike if you have to. Walking wouldn’t be too fun. The amenities are close by. There are plenty of shopping centers/restaurants directly south of campus.

If you’re looking on craigslist, which I assume you are, check out places in “UTC”. That’s basically the area of town close to school where “condo hell” is located. But like Grimes99 said, bike or shuttle is necessary.

I have a 1 bedroom in mission valley for $1000, but I am transferring into the mesa housing apartments which is around $980 for a two bedroom and it is pretty much on campus.

Can new transfers get into Mesa? I thought it was only for families and grad students…

And if you were going to commute from Mission Valley, might as well live somewhere cool like North Park, South Park, Hillcrest, University Heights or Normal Heights. The rents in these neighborhoods are decently priced, and they are the younger/hipper areas. But not super close to campus (though I know people who live there and commute by bus to school… the bus is free with your campus ID). I wouldn’t move to Mission Valley though, its not close to campus and its not very pleasant (unless you like an abundance of shopping malls, condos and traffic).

I found this:

If I were you, I’d rather live right by UCSD. This way you don’t have to deal with driving to campus, and most importantly, dealing with parking!!!

Mission Valley is a good area, but it’s just as expensive and you would have to drive each day to campus, unless you take the bus/trolley.

If with you on this one. I really want a single at the Village, if not then I will go outside.

Yes transfers they can, I am going with my girlfriend, we qualify because we are both attending UCSD.

^Ah, but you qualify as a “committed couple,” yes? Single undergraduates can’t live at Mesa. I really wish we could, though.

Clairemont, Otay (near Imperial), North Park, SierraMesa, Mission Valley, etc.

Actually it looks like you can, I just checked the website, you can be partnered with a roommate.

Point noted, thanks yo.

Ok so this nearby ‘UTC’ area – is housing here limited mainly to condos, or does it also have single studios/single bedroom apartments for students?
