Single Studio Apartment for UC transfers.

How hard is it to get a 1BR, 1BA apartment for a transfer student at UCD, UCLA, UCI, etc. ? I've had bad experiences with roommates in the past and would just like to live and study on my own.

If I ask for a single on my applications to these schools and I'm granted admission, will they comply with my preferences? Thank you.

I've taken a fancy to the Primero Grove Apartments at UC Davis: Primero Grove - Apartments in Davis, CA - Davis housing option for students

^ What are the chances I can get this unit? The studio unit is 677 a month and that fits very will with my budget.

Don’t know about UCD, but UCLA and UCI have them available. Off campus shouldn’t be too tough, but be prepared to shell out some cash. UCI’s on-campus is insanely expensive for singles. UCLA’s are literally right across the two lane street from the dorms/campus. You could throw a rock and hit them, so it’s really close.

^And we forgot to see them when I went down in the summer, I only ended up seeing the completely awesome campus. I can testify to them being close-by though, there’s “the hill” to deal with but from what I’ve heard it’s only a 15 minute walk (give or take) from classes even at a fairly slow pace so we’re talking quite close

Yeah, but you hit most the hill even if you’re at the dorms. The dorms and “frat row” are about 50 yards away from another at some points haha.

^I should probably avoid the frat houses, I was hoping fo De Neve, Riber, or Dykstra, I heard they were some of the nicest. Of course the grad school housing (yes I looked it up too XD) is REALLY nice… I’d like it if it was on the campus for the feel of it but those are some very neat places.

CollegeConfidential Stereotype #3: You won’t have a social life at college unless you share a 2 bedroom apartment with 8 people or share a dorm room with 3 people.

You’ve been warned! lol.

The UCI apartment housing is unreal. It is so freakin nice. Of course you end up paying $1100 for the place. The downside is it is ridiculously expensive. The upsides are you’re close to campus, all utlities are included and it is some of the cheapest housing you can find in Irvine. It is an expensive city .You can look in Lake Forest or Tustin, but Tustin can get real ghetto real quick.
UCLA housing looks super…generic. I looked at it yesterday and I don’t think I could handle it.
If you’re willing to live off campus around LA you can find awesome studios for $900. You will have to drive, but you can keep it under 20 minutes which, for LA, is not bad.

I am looking for a place at either UCLA or Berkeley. I do not care if I have 0 or 5 roommates, as long as I have my own room, and it is not a constant party all the time.

I am also an older student, so I am not exactly down with 18-21 year old students, unless they are low-key. I just know my 30 year old self would never want to bunk with my 20 year old self.

Any older students have experience with this?

I’m 23, self-made and I do alright…

… but I’m still down to party with the 18-20 year olds :D

I am down to party with anyone of any age at any time.

I just don’t want to LIVE at the party haha. I have already lived in houses like that before. I actually have a really nice apartment right now in Pacific Beach, and I’ll be giving that up to move to Cal/UCLA.

I need to figure out where I’ll live, too. I’d like to live in student housing, but I’m an avid target shooter, and I’m pretty sure I can’t have my firearms on university property, even if its some distance away from the campus itself. Hopefully I’ll be able to split a place with my buddy, whether its UCB, UCLA, or UCSD I get into, since it appears rental costs are pretty high around the schools.

@santacruzstefan- Yikes. No offense, but I wouldn’t want to live with or near a bunch of guns…however, if at UCLA, god only knows what is lurking around, haha.

Well, I don’t keep them loaded lol, theres no danger when they’re in my safe. Guns aren’t gonna hurt anybody unless a criminal is using them, and thats not me. In fact, it would be better living near me in case there was some sort of civil unrest, especially in a place like LA. Or, God forbid, a student randomly shooting people. Its the crazies we need to be worried about, not lawful gun owners. But I understand the UC rules against weapons on campus, its just the off-campus housing rule that I disagree with.

lol UCLA is in like the safest part of LA. have you ever been to Westwood? you don’t need to worry about anything, much less bring a gun.

That isn’t saying much. I am familiar with Westwood, but there isn’t exactly a gate between Westwood and the rest of Los Angeles. However, nothing is worse than USC. It’s an awful area.

the rest of los angeles? uhhh ok…

LA really isn’t as ghetto or unsafe as it’s portrayed in movies and TV. there aren’t bloods and crips walking every corner and people don’t run around with AK’s. Most of LA is fairly quiet and peaceful, unless you live next to a club or bar or something.

and i would agree that USC is pretty much “in the hood”…but don’t judge a book by it’s cover ^^

Is it hard to find an off-campus studio/apartment in Davis? Or should I just look toward the neighboring cities like Vacaville.

Oh wait…wrong board.

There should also be an option of getting a dorm right guys? If so, how much more would we be paying contrast to commuting?

I didn’t mean I thought I needed my guns for protection, but shooting is one of my hobbies and I’d like to be able to do it when I transfer. Of course, they can fulfill a defensive role, too, but thats their secondary purpose and I don’t expect to need them for that.

What are some of the neighboring communities by UCLA or UCSD, and do they have cheaper rent then the areas closer to campus? Berkeley I’d probably just live in Castro Valley and take BART, or hopefully Albany, since its a pretty nice area.
