Heads up for anyone auditioning at Northwestern this weekend

The relatively minor snowstorm that had been forecast for Friday has ramped up into a more significant accumulation. Still a dusting by Chicago standards (5-9 inches last I looked), but enough that American Airlines emailed us today to offer to rebook at no charge.

D is now going to head out there tomorrow to try to get ahead of the storm. We also moved the return flight from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.

More time to get a feel for the campus!

I hope your daughter has a good experience in the SS Bienen (what the students call the building). When mine auditioned there 2 years ago, I waited outside for her - “Nope, there’s a voice recital, see you in an hour” - “I’m meeting some VP students for coffee - “There’s a matinee of Spamalot, can I text you when it ends?” D is now a sophomore VP dual degree with Weinberg College of Arts/Sciences. There’s usually a lot going on at night in the Arts Circle (dance, theatre, a capella concerts, etc.) so I hope your D gets an opportunity to see something. (If it was 2 weeks later, I’d send you to my D’s play.) Evanston is a fun town, too, and Chicago just an el ride away. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks. I visited the campus in September with D, so NYCMusicMom is taking this one. They will probably lay low on Friday with the audition still to go and the snowstorm, but I’ll definitely encourage her to do up Arts Circle on Saturday. This is audition number 7 of 8, at least that part is almost over.

If your D has any great Bienen classes on Friday AM or early afternoon D would be allowed to observe, I’m sure she’d enjoy that. She didn’t plan anything because she wasn’t going to get there until Friday evening until the storm. She would like to go to the chorale rehearsal, but it looks like it’s happening during the worst of the storm. We did upgrade the car rental to a 4WD, but I’m not sure they want to be driving back to the hotel in the worst of it.

I haven’t spent much time on other forums, but Music Major has to be the nicest, most helpful forum on CC, no?

I don’t know my D’s daily schedule, but your D should visit Music admissions; “prospies” frequently sit in on classes and rehearsals. As for driving, the roads should be pretty decent even with the snowfall bc we had warning of this storm. Where is the hotel? Not Evanston?

Nearby in Skokie- was supposed to just be for one night.

Meanwhile the projected storm start time in Chicago (it has a name now, Mateo) was 11 PM tonight twelve hours ago, 9 PM tonight 8 hours ago, now it’s 6PM tonight. Just changed the outgoing flight for the 5th time. Surprised the AA reservations people don’t answer the phone with “you again?”

We live one county north of NU and are planning a belated birthday dinner for our D in Evanston on Friday night, depending on DH’s recovery from a nasty cold (don’t want to share it with the vocalist). Getting from Evanston to Skokie should be relatively straightforward even in a snowstorm - the main issue will likely be Friday morning commute time. There are some terrific restaurants in Evanston and I hope your W and D check out artscircle.northwestern.edu to see what is happening this weekend. That will show mainstage productions, but there are also student productions going on all over campus. Basketball unfortunately is out in the suburbs by O’Hare in Allstate Arena due to campus renovations. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

As per my daughter, snow began falling around 5:30 in Chicago and by the time she got out of her lesson and was on the way home, it was coming down hard. Weather reports are saying 1/2- 1/hour through Friday afternoon and announced that the “morning commute will be extremely difficult or impossible”. All public and private schools announced they were closing in advance of the storm- sensible thing to do. Of course, a change of wind and the Lake Effect can cause the snowfall to vary widely within a mile or so! I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the colleges close in the morning because their faculty and staff can’t make it in to work.

Stay safe!

Looks like NU is open today, I assume they’ll have everything plowed by tomorrow when D’s audition is. Hopefully she can get over to see some classes this afternoon.

When the storm start time shifted from 9 PM to 6 PM we changed the plane tickets from the 6:30 out of LGA to the 4:30 out of LGA. Good thing, the 6:30 was canceled! 36 standbys for the 4:30.
