Healthy Living Communities

Hey, I was recently accepted to WUSTL and I have completely fallen in love with it. I was wondering if anyone is part of one of those substance-free healthy living communities and how you/your peers like it. As someone who is not really into the party scene and who likes peace and quiet sometimes, I am very interested in living in one of these "communities", but I would really like more info about it. I was telling a few friends at school about it and they quickly popped my bubble by saying that no one would follow the rules. Is this true? Thanks!

Collegehappy,

I live on a floor that is above a Healthly Living Community, and can tell you that the rules that are in place are strictly followed. My advice would be to consider the other kinds of people who will choose healthy living communities, and whether or not those are the kinds of people you will want to be friends with. There is peace and quiet to be found on other floors as well (there are quiet hours in effect after a certain time), and I have greatly enjoyed the huge range of personalities on my (non-Healthy Living Community) floor.

so what kind of rules they have?

I’m not clear on the specifics, but I believe that every member of the floor signs a pledge to not have or bring any alcohol onto the floor, to not drink in excess. “Healthy Living Community” (HLC) tends to be a euphemism for “sub-free floor”.

Parents (or students) might be worried that this implies that these rules are not enforced on non-Healthy Living Community floors: Whereas the focus on HLC floors is the prohibition of any alcohol, the focus on non-HLC floors is more on safety and responsibility. I currently live on a non-HLC floor and have been very comfortable with how alchohol-related issues are addressed by my RA’s and our Residential Life staff.

Even if you didn’t partyin high school, don’t worry about it. It may not be perfectly quiet on the weekends in non sub free floors but on weekdays there are “quiet hours” across campus so if it is after 11 you shouldn’t have trouble getting to sleep. Trust me on this, you don’t want healthy living. PM me if you want to know anything else about it.

Sub-free is a great option. I’ve been a staff member on a sub-free floor as well as a resident of a regular floor. Wonderful people and environment for both. Feel free to PM.
