Hello. My daughter will be living on the HLC (Healthy Living Community, Healthy Alternative Lifestyle Floor) floor at BC located on upper campus. My daughter liked the idea that the floor was quieter, especially for pre games. I understand that no alcohol, tobacco, etc. is allowed on the floor. I am a mother and I do know what goes on at college and I do want my daughter to have the typical, but still safe, college experience. Will she still be able to attend parties? What will happen if she decides to have a drink at a party? I know she liked the idea of a substance free and quieter dorm but she is not somebody who wants to be completely isolated from the typical college social scene. What are the exact rules for this floor (i.e. what is in the contract)? please tell me all the information you know.

Technically (and legally) all Frosh dorms are sub-free. :D

Of course in practice, that just means that one needs to hide the kegger when the RA knocks on the door. But that is for the typical dorm.

I would guess that the HLC is more strict, since that is the premise.

fwiw: All BC dorms are very safe, with rather good security.

Hi. I was on the HLC floors for the last two years. She will still be able to attend parties, considering she’s a legal adult and nobody can legally stop her from doing anything. The only thing is that if she gets caught engaging in an illegal behavior with drugs or alcohol there might be harsher consequences for getting caught.

During my time I attended many parties and had to be “smarter” about going out. I never felt like I was isolated from the college scene, but there is somewhat of a stigma with HLC people as introverts, although for females it’s much less so. If you have more specific questions, you can PM me.
