Between our daily breakfasts (berries and yogurt) and D24’s smoothie habit, we go through a 3lb bag of berries every week .
I usually only buy fresh berries as a “we’re going to eat the entire carton today “ treat when they’re in season locally and irresistible. I’ve had too many berries get moldy before we can finish the carton otherwise.
I recently bought a plastic berry basket that is vented at Home Goods to give it a shot because I was tired of strawberries especially going soft or drying out after just a day or two. I rinse the berries, set on a cloth towel to dry and then put them in the berry keeper. The last batch lasted a good ten days before we finally finished them.
Yes, I’ve had some luck with things like that, and also with soaking in vinegar, then rinsing, drying and storing. I just don’t have the time for that kind of prep, usually–especially given the quantity of berries we consume.
I have never wanted to take the time either - but especially got tired of the strawberries (Costco sized!) going bad. This week I bought strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and raspberries. The blueberries always last well. The blackberries are not an enormous container. H eats the raspberries quick. So I only give the special treatment to the strawberries! And I’m finding I am throwing away less fruit.
But absolutely frozen fruit is a good option. My fav is frozen cherries.
Folks, this is the best container for storing produce and especially berries.

I wash the carton of strawberries I buy at Costco, cut them up, and store in the container in the fridge. They last a few days guaranteed… but we usually finish that Costco sized carton in 2 days!
My husband has psoriatic arthritis. This winter he went on his yearly diet. Lost 15 pounds.
We joined Costco and have been buying berries like crazy for him to snack on.
The by product is that he is feeling lighter and his joints are better.
Realized that his new way on eating was unintentionally an anti inflammatory diet. So win, win!
The savings on those berries and the Costco gas alone are worth the membership. That’s so great to hear for him! (they have the best blueberries - grocery store blueberries rarely can match the quality).
I decided to stop today at King Soopers, not my usual store. Perhaps due to discussions here, I decided to buy the 18oz blueberries for $3.99. Figured if needed I can freeze any extras.
Interesting article - thanks for posting.
Makes me glad that years ago I gave up my lunchtime can of diet soda in favor of water. But hey, at least I was not downing daily 6-packs,
Also switched to plain greek yogurt (with fruit and nut add-ins;) instead of the carton of flavored… admittedly working from home made that sack lunch change a bit easier logistically. It did take some time to get used to it, but now I like it. Sometimes if it is a dessert I’ll include chocolate chips or and/or coconut.
Hopping in late, but I love the thin ginger snaps. I thought they were safe, but apparently my children like them too:)
Actually had some ginger snaps last night. (For me they were a small-portion snack, though I did have three. For my husband they were helpful on an iffy stomach, kind of like some people drink ginger ale to sooth stomach.) I will pick up some more today when stopping at the bulk food store.
I’m told that ginger snaps are fantastic dunked in whiskey but have not tried that yet. It is of course a topic for a different thread.
I think that sounds like a fun summer thread!!! Please start it!
May need to do that, if alcohol threads allowable by CC Terms of Service. (Hubby got on a Sidecar cocktail kick this month). In the meantime, there are some drink ideas here - Drinks for book club
I bought an 18oz pkg of blackberries at Sam’s today. Froze half for when we get back from vacation (hope that works).
Tonight had some blackberries with greek yogurt and coconut and chopped walnuts. It was tasty and filling. Yea, my husband’s ice cream looked better… but after our DQ Blizzard last night (we split it), I opted not to indulge again.
We had full-fat calorie-laden ice cream by the lake last night…because it was a holiday…yeah, that’s the reason. Thankfully, no more holidays before our son’s wedding next month (well, June 2nd is National Donut Day). After the wedding, I plan to go back to the creamery and order a Mint Chocolate Chip frappe. Maybe a large. And I will enjoy every slurp.
That sounds perfect. I’ll never give up ice cream completely. Just like the idea of it as an occasional treat, not a daily staple (except perhaps when on vacation).
Has me humming, “I’m Popeye the sailor man….”
