hear back from ucf summer 2012?

Any of us can’t tell for sure if anyone will be accepted or not. However, we can still cheer each other up, to stay possitive and give suggestions. We do not need to be rude to anyone.
If my daughter was deferred with a 3.3 weighted gpa, not brilliant SAT/ACT scores, not one extracurricular and only community service hours, everyone should be hopeful!!!

@daviddj

Thank you for your input. My daughter is already scheduled to take the SAT again in Dec. as mentioned. Daughter has all those preparatory courses and it hasn’t helped her.

Oh, btw, I don’t have a son and I only have one daughter going through the college process. :-)

I spoke with one of the admission recruiters and he stated that most universities look at the overall students. If a student lack in one area then they look to see if they compensated it in another area. High SAT scores will off set low GPA, vice a versa. Combination of sports, EC and community services hours also looks good. It shows the person is well rounded. So, if you haven’t been denied don’t loose hope. If you have been denied ask why if they didn’t give you an explanation and see if there is a way of improving.

It looks like you have had a difficult life and I do hope the best for you. Keep the faith. BTW, I also make my daughter pay for her SAT and gas for her car. She can only work during the summer and she saves all her money for her to live on for the school year. She is unable to work during the school year due to her hectic schedule of cheering for the school (football and basketball games), competing at cheer competitions and volunteer work. Just know that having financial responsibilities and being able to manage money will help you in the long run in your adult years.

Thank you very much for the kind words, cheermom:) Ah, I know how hectic cheerleading can get. I didn’t cheerleading for seven years, and was a competitive cheerleader for two years after that. Eventually, I just could balance it all out. So I decided on school, work, and I coached a cheerleading team for three years. Do you know of how heavily they look at community service hours? Because I feel like that’s my biggest positive, but it may not mean all too much of them. Currently, I have 700, but on my application, I put 630 (Which was what I had at the time). I have a very, very average ACT score (22) and a lower GPA, so I’m really crossing my fingers that the community service, essays, writing and violin awards pulls me through to, at least, the defered pile. I’d be happy to be deffered (When dod you hear that from a student?! lol).

Write, I totally agree with cheermom. They look at scores and gps, but also to the overall picture of the student. Everything counts, not just numbers. I think that community service weighs quite a bit. Some people might not do so well at school but they have a big heart and they give a lot to their community and viceversa. I think that is as important. I am hoping you will be at least deferred. They are really trying to figure out how to help you and be fair to you. I think that’s the delay, otherwise they would have rejected you just like they did with your brother.
Shoot the e-mail to Elizabeth Costello!!!

I did yesterday! My manager actually sat me down in front of her laptop, and told me to write out the email. I was so scared, but she pushes me to do it:) I’m very unsure of how they will react to such an email, though. It wasn’t simply saying, “I love your school!” matter. It was much more personal, where I actually went into a bit more detail of the loses I’ve faced, as well as some other person problems that I didn’t mention in my essay. I even willingly admitted that coaching my cheerleading team (Which makes up almost all of my community service hours) as well as orchestra, and work, acted as an escape to what I was facing. I stated that I know I’m a very good student, but my GPA doesn’t give the same impression. Finally, I ended simply by just asking for a chance to show them that I DO deserve to get into their school. Cross my fingers, I have a feeling next week is going to be when it happens.

I spoke to the UWF and USF admissions recruiters that are assigned to my daughter’s high school. I wasn’t able to speak with the UCF recruiter since I wasn’t able to meet with them when they were at the high school. However, we are scheduled to tour UCF on Nov. 19th so I plan to speak with the admission rep then.

We have toured USF on Oct. 22nd and spoke with that recruiter again and reemphasis the overall stats of the students.

Cheermom

In your opinion which is the better school academically UCF or USF

And tell us about UCF when you visit :)

^ Depends on program. Overall, they’re about equal.

@problemofchoice,

Are you going to attend ucf

Yessirrrr :)

Cool. I believe I will too. I want the towers so bad. Hopefully I will get them.

Apply early (ie the day the application opens), get into honors if you can, and/or be national merit lol

Lol national merit. Towers 3 is honors right?

Yeahhhh budddy. So theoretically, you’d only have to compete against other honors kids who also submitted the app on day one for the spots left open by graduating seniors and kids that decide to live off campus. And there won’t be many since nearly every smart kid in the state is waiting until at least February to see what UF does.

True. You said you are going to attend UCF. Does that mean you have no interest in UF?

It means that UF got rid of their national merit scholarship in 2007 and UCF offered everything under the sun lol. I also took a tour of both and was underwhelmed by UF and relatively impressed by UCF.

I’m taking a tour of UCF on the 27th. How was the campus/social activities there?

Campus is great. Everything is new. The campus setup is efficient and smart. Dorms are top notch (towers are nicer than my house lol). The meal plan places (Knightros and The Marketplace) have excellent food (better than my mom’s cooking). The campus is surprisingly quiet, even on a class day. The people on campus seemed nice and happy. There were not as many “bros” as UF.

Socially, you’ll be more than fine. It’s the 2nd largest college in the country, so you’ll be able to find a group of people interested in even the most obscure crap. Additionally, it’s a huge party school. One thing to take note of (which is either good or bad depending on your perspective) is that the Greek community at UCF makes up a relatively small percentage (4%-6%) of the population compared to some other schools such as UF and FSU.

Sounds really nice. I’m really glad I’ve been accepted. The area is nice too I bet because it’s in an urban area about 20 minutes from universal and Disney. Easier to get a job I’m sure as well. From the pictures I’ve seen, the dorms at UCF are the nicest, especially the towers.
