Heavy Course Loads + Work (Need Encouragement/Advice!)

Hey all, I'm a student at a California community college, transferring to UCD in the fall. I've got one (full) semester left at my CCC, and it looks like it's going to be a doozy. I'm a biosci major and, long story short, because of the course articulation between my CCC and UCD, I have to take two biology classes + Calc II this semester ... and I'm working part time (~11 hrs/week).

It's only 15 semester units on paper, but because the bio classes have labs, I'm in class for 23 hrs/week.

Plant biology: 3 hrs lecture + 6 hrs lab = 9 hrs
Animal biology: 3 hrs lecture + 6 hrs lab = 9 hrs
Calculus II: 5 hrs lecture

On top of this, the professor for my plant biology class explicitly discouraged the class from taking plant bio and animal bio at the same time, saying that anyone who does that can usually expect to drop a full letter grade in each class lol. The biology classes at my school are notoriously difficult, and my plant bio professor said that people have reported spending 12-20 hrs a week studying for that class. I did something similar last semester, but I took my introductory biology class at another CCC in the district which doesn't have the notoriety that my current one does, and I was only doing 9 hrs of lab a week.

So, I was just wondering if anyone else here has ever done anything like that and what your experience was like, what a typical week for you looked like, any advice, etc. I've read some of the stories here, I'm sure there's someone who's done something MUCH more intense than what I'm doing. :P

You are in for a sweet, sweet surprise…

the averages at UCR are like D’s for those classes LOL

One semester I had two CS classes, Calc 1 and Physics 1 while working 40hrs/wk. You’ll be fine

You’ll do great! Don’t second guess yourself.

No worries. That is definitely feasible. My advice is that you try to review the material immediately after class for the bio classes especially because I got lazy/arrogant and put it off until exam/ lab exam time and it bit me in the butt. Plant bio has A LOT to memorize.

This puts everything into perspective for me. I’m doing like 16 units and I’m complaining about working 15 hours a week or so, my God.

Good luck, you’ll sure need it! <3

I did 20 units at once. Math, Physics, Chem, Comm and Programming. Boy it was fun… (sarcasm). During every break in between my classes I worked on assignments. My planner/schedule was to complete an average of 2-3 tasks per day. Hw, Lab, Study. The good stuff.

Sounds cliche, but you can do it if you set your mind to it. Last semester I was taking differential equations, linear algebra, physics, c++, and speech at the same time on top of working roughly 20 hrs a week, and managed to pull straight As. It’s not gonna be easy and you may have to sacrifice a lot of your social life, but you can do it and will all be worth it in the end. Good luck!

Thanks, guys! I guess it’s just all the lab hours that’s got me worried. I’m not terribly good at labs, plus the fact that at least for my chemistry classes, labs were practically another class added on, what with all the write-ups, pre-labs, etc. Eh, c’est la vie.

@mermaker: Do you mean a pleasant or an unpleasant surprise? lol

ha that scheduled looks intense man. But I’m sure you can easily pull it off. It’ll take some dedication though.
