Hello fellow Columbia EDers
Feel free to rant here (:
I personally am okay I guess...

disappointed about getting a deferral, but not doing too bad i suppose.
at least there’s still hope for us, right?

This topic speaks to my soul.

:

i hope to get accepted on regular decision… little bit sad that i need to write tons of essays and financial aid forms and to spend money on sending scores to schools I apply for regular decision…

Good Luck every deferred guys

For anyone who was interested in Finance, apply to NYU Stern!! I hear that NYU Stern grads get better starting salaries on Wall Street than Columbia kids.

(If this isn’t true, don’t try to prove me wrong. Just let me just pretend, lol)

It’s true actually. NYU stern is one of the best in the US.

I’m interested in NYU CAS (college of art and science) though.

My deferred friends.
Actually, after reading who exactly was deferred and rejected, I suddenly feel a little less bad and a bit more optimistic about the OTHER colleges I plan on applying to. As for NYU CAS, I am applying but the financial aid just won’t be enough I don’t think. My top choices are UPenn and UChicago right now…and maybe Barnard if I get past the all-girls thing…and the stereotypes.

Im applying to:

1-Cornell
2-Harvard
3-UPenn
4-Yale
5-Brown
6-Dartmouth
7-Princeton
8-NYU (CAS)
9-Stony Brook
10-Binghamton
11-Macaulay Honors at Hunter (Already Applied)
12-Fordham (already applied-EA)
13-St. John’s University

Hehe , I wonder if I’ll somehow end up at an Ivy.

Sorry Silence1113, but with an 1890, you’ll get rejected by at least the first eight schools on your list. I say that with 100% certainty. You’re not a URM either. You should have been more practical with your list.

Ahh, see I’m only interested in colleges near major cities so the ivy leagues don’t interest me except for UPenn. But that is a ridiculous list, lolol. My full list is:

UPenn

UChicago

NYU CAS

Barnard

Georgetown

UC Berkeley (done)

UCLA (done)

UW Honors (done/safety…)

My list is practical. I have safeties and matches. The ivys are for fun …I do think though that I have a chance at UPenn, Brown, Dartmouth and Cornell.

And if I do get in an Ivy Ill make sure to post it here :)

^Oops I meant that is a ridiculously long list, not that the colleges are ridiculous.

That’s ok lol, I was replying to cornetking222.

My list is:

1-Princeton
2-Yale
3-Cornell
4-MIT
5-Duke
6-UVA
7-U Chicago
8-UNC-CH
9-William & Mary

Dreams still set on Columbia though.

I’m still a little lost as to how I should be responding to the deferral. In truth with my grades and scores, I was really lucky to get it, but my natural reaction was frustration and anger.
Actually, being deferred by Columbia has kind of encouraged me to aim a bit higher with my applications, so I might fill out a few to more prestigious places now. I hadn’t even really considered other Ivies…anyone who has visited Columbia, any suggestions for schools with a similar “feel”?

The second choices for most students (at least in the college) tend to be Chicago or Brown. Some also like Yale. Of course, Yale and Brown are essentially as selective as Columbia so that may not be much help. And neither are in the city. If you love the city, then you have to check out NYU (CAS or Gallatin). NYU’s jewels are Tisch and Stern, but they’re both highly specialized. If you’re the kind of liberal arts student who applied to CC, you’ll be happiest in NYU CAS or Gallatin.

While I love that you guys are not pinning your hopes on the slim chance of being accepted to Columbia in the RD round, and are seriously considering other schools that you could see yourselves at, I think you have to give yourselves some credit. Columbia rejects the vast majority of ED applicants; only a small number are accepted or deferred. The admissions committee obviously saw something in you, and that same something will likely get you admitted to some fantastic schools!

all i’m saying is, UChicago better accept me lol jk. But seriously, if I got into UC, i’d forget about my Columbia deferral in like a second.

hey pwoods - would you happen to know any statistics or anecdotal information about deferred students? the letter says that in past years deferred applicants have been ultimately accepted at “a rate comparable to the overall admissions rate.” 9% then? or, more likely for this year, 7 or 8? i feel that, especially with the expected increase in regular decision applications, us deferred people don’t stand much of a chance at all. sad but realistic i guess…

:(
this is quite depressing

It’s seriously confusing. I keep switching between depressed and really really grateful. I hate not knowing how to feel about this.

I visited NYU and hated it, tbh. I just liked the social/academic environment at Columbia more than anything. But yeah, can’t wait to hear from UChicago either.
