Help a fashion newbie

If you can find some on sale, AE really does have great polos. I'm not the preppy type at all but I still have 3 or 4 from there. Other than that, just get some decent jeans. Personally, I like Levi's but they are a touch on the expensive side sometimes (at least for me). They are about $35/pair. Whatever you do, DONT get clothes at Wal-mart. It's nothing but crap there most of the time. Target is a good place to get stuff though, at least for girls but I don't know how their men's selection is. Be sure and get several t-shirts with your school's name on them, too. Actually, this is about the only thing you can buy at wal-mart and it won't be sh.t, because it's licensed school gear.

$35 for Levi's? are you kidding me? thats CHEAP!! in Sweden you will have to give $150 for Levi's. cant remember the last time i bought a pair of jeans for under 120-130 dollars...

Jeans and t-shirts or polos work everywhere, and I would second the suggestion of target over walmart.

You really can't go wrong with the jeans and t-shirt thing...but I can't really recommend much else since I don't know you. Cause, yeah, what looks great on one guy may make another look like he's trying to be something he's not :/

But to comment on what has already been said...if your budget is more on the frugal side, you can find a lot of great stuff by browsing sales racks at the mall. JcPenny always has a ton of sales and its regular prices aren't bad, either. Some of the other stores like American Eagle also have a ton of good stuff on the clearance racks.

Popped collars are fine lots of places. Just observe what other people are wearing. It depends from school to school.

Dude, first get a job, having money coming in evry week really helps.

As for clothes I do buy clothes from abercrombie/hollister/ae/pacsun and all those other stores, yet I look for good buys. Yes abercrombie sells polos for like 60 bucks, but when they do go on clearance you can get them for 20-30 dollars. Same goes for hollister and ae. If you go to hollisters website you can see a whole bunch of t-shirts on clearance for only $13 and even the ones that aren't on clearance range from $15-$20. So if you are willing to spend $13 on a green polo from target why not buy a tshirt from hollister for the same price? Another thing is that alot of the times there are things online that you can't get in stores. So consider buying your clothes online, if yor were to spend about $200 you could easily get a complete wardrobe and probably only have to pay $20 for shipping. Try out some of the stores I listed you can easily find clothes in your budget. And if you don't mind me asking what is your budget? We could give you much better advice if we knew what you are working with.

what, to you, constitutes a 'complete wardrobe'? because, imo, you couldn't get anywhere near a full wardrode from any store for $200

I doubt you'd be lucky enough to get a complete wardrobe including pants, but you can definitely get enough shirts plus one good jacket for around $200 through online clearances.

People here apparently have too high of tastes... I can't remember the last time I spent more than 50 dollars on an item of clothing, and that is ALOT for me. Actually, probably the only thing I've ever got for more than that was prom dresses and a winter coat. This is what SALES are for, people. I guess growing up poor has its advantages, you learn how to scrimp and save. But seriously, I don't understand why people would spend like $60 on one thing, unless it was a really special occasion or something (like the prom dresses). I could definitely get a basic wardrobe for $200.

Just get one pair of Levi's 501s ($30), blank tshirts (3 for $10 at swap meets), and some hoodies (I usually pay around $15-$20). You will fit right in. For shoes, don't get anything ridiculous and stick with Converse Chuck Taylors ($30, $20 at swap meet). You won't get noticed for being the most fashionable guy on campus, but you also won't get noticed for looking strange or awkward. The most important thing is FIT. Do not oversize, and do not undersize. Get clothes that fit you comfortably. I seriously can't emphasize how important fit is.. brands don't mean a thing.

Things to stay away from if you don't want to be labeled in any way:

Girl jeans (emo or homo)
Jean shorts (ghetto, hillbilly)
Shants, which are shorts that are almost long enough to be pants (ghetto, do not wear unless you live in South Central or East LA)
Capris (I've seen guys wear them.. ?)
HUGE t-shirts (ghetto)
EXTREMELEY tight shirts (emo)
Baggy jeans (You're not in middle school)
White jeans or white chinos (Just don't)
Anything pink (Ryan Seacrest is not cool)
Popped collars (..)

Seriously, just stick with the basics until you can develop your own sense of style. You do this throughout the years by people-watching.

AIM me or PM me if you have any questions, I'll be glad to help.

Dude, I can assure you right now that you are not going to get laid in college. Your taste in clothing in on par with elementry school kids.

thank you for saying what i was thinking...

"Seriously, just stick with the basics until you can develop your own sense of style. You do this throughout the years by people-watching."
Ha. Ironic.

I don't suggest AE/similar stores. The shirts are overpriced and holes appear after two-three washings. It's ridiculous.
Jeans + plain t-shirts + some sweatshirts + sneakers = a perfectly normal college wardrobe, and your safest option.

Gap. Cheaper than you'd think, as long as you don't actually buy anything at full price.

If you have one anywhere around you, H&M = teh cheap.

Personally, I'd never touch Aeropostale, and there are only a few things that I'll currently accept from AF or AE (mainly jeans). Otherwise J.Crew, Banana Republic, Gap (for the really basic stuff), Brook's Brothers 346 brand, and Express are all you need - price is reasonable and these stores are everywhere. Maybe some place like Dillard's or Nordstrom's to pick up the Horse (Polo) or the Gator (Lacoste)...but then again, I'm all about keeping it frat.

Beyond that, you really need to develop your own sense of style. As others have mentioned there are a ton of styles out there. Find what you like, what you enjoy wearing and what makes you feel good. While alot of the stuff at AF and Hollister is the height of douchebaggery, that doesn't mean it isn't right for some people (plus it makes it easier to identify the offenders...)

Didn't expect people to jump on me for suggesting 501s, blank shirts/hoodies, and chucks. If you dont think wearing clothes like Brando can't get you laid, I wouldn't want anything to do with the type of chicks you are trying to attract. And LesOs, can you explain to me what was ironic about what I said? I'm confused because the second part of your post seems to be in agreement with me. All I have to say to some of you is.. where I live, you get your ass kicked for wearing Abercrombie/American Eagle, or any other "preppy" middle schooler/asian tourist outfit.

I second H&M, and also suggest Uniqlo if you're anywhere near Manhattan.

Guess, Express for Men, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Banana Republic, SOME Lacoste, SOME Polo, Hugo Boss, for clothing. Steve Madden and Aldo for shoes, Chanel for cologne, and you will be all set my friend. In my opinion, all these brands I mentioned are of quality products, but not overly priced like designer clothes such as Gucci, D&G, Robert Cavali, etc. So, in the end, you get what you paid for without having to burn a hole in your wallet.

everyone here is so against abercrombie... hell i knew there was gonna be someone talking about "conformity" go watch the south park episode on conformity.. now that was funny. In all reality unless you buy abercrombie jeans their clothes really arent too much more expensive than other stores such as kohls or jc penny. Maybe 4-5 dollars more. Ladies like guys who dress nice, dont go spending 500 dollars on clothes... but don't buy your clothes from wal-mart or target. You are better off buying a few less shirts from a nicer store than more shirts from wal-mart or target. Not to say there arent cool tshirts at target. Hell even I own a shirt from there. What mattzheng mentioned above sounded good too. Listen to what he has to say.

And yes there are many many many gay clothes at abercrombie lol... I dont even walk in the store anymore. I have my mommy go buy my clothes for me :) Don't go crazy with style... tshirt and jeans cuts it, just look clean cut and your fine. People who care too much about style are usually gay or called gay.

tough guys dont wear pink

Do you live anywhere by an H&M? They are in the same price range as the Gap, but it's much trendier. You can look good and not feel like a douchebag for spending way too much.
