I'm a junior in high school and haven't taken the SAT yet. I'm planning on taking the SAT this January. Today I took the official practice SAT on the College Board website as a diagnostic to see where I stand, and my scores were as follows: CR - 510, Math - 570, Writing - 700. (1780.) I know these scores are terrible. I need some advice on how to increase my Math and CR scores. I have the materials to study, which I'm planning to start studying hardcore tomorrow. I have the Blue Book, Barrons SAT guide, Direct hits v.1, v.2, Princeton 2011, and Princeton Cracking the SAT. Which book should I focus the most on. Also I noticed that I over-analyze the reading comp. stuff, but I'm usually able to narrow choices down to 1-2. vocab I got 13/19 right. Any advice on how I can improve my CR and Math? Thanks in advance.

Not to be rude, but these threads are getting quite repetitive, and they all ask for the same thing: advice on how to improve. If you were to take a minute of your time to check the threads stickied in this section, your problems would be solved. But I’ll do it for you:

Any information you might need can be found in both links above.

Take a test out of the blue book. The online CB test gives you an automatic 12 on your essay, regardless of what you write, so it’s VERY likely that your writing grade is extremely inflated. In which case you need a better general understanding of the SAT.

Make a goals list.
- What is your score goal?
- Do you want to go to a college that weighs the scores heavier? (like an engineering school looking at your SAT math score?)
- What do you think is an achievable short term goal? How much of a score increase do you want to see every week/two weeks?
- Are you sure you want to take the January SAT? Should you reschedule to give yourself more time to prepare?

Short term goals:
- Raise score to: xxxx by the end of winter break
- Raise CR to xxx, W to xxx, and M to xxx.
- Write and have x essays graded
- Read some good literature (1800s classics, The Economist, most “dense” literature)
- Read _______ section of _________ practice book

Long term goals:
- Have score of xxxx by x/xx
- Raise essay score to xx
- Take the ____ SAT

If you make a list of goals, you can chart your improvement and see how well you’re doing. As for improving CR and Math, there really isn’t anything CC can advise specifically other than to review, because (and I hate to say this) you’re at a level where the most improvement has to come from your dedication and hard work. You haven’t hit your full potential yet, and we know that. We can’t give you tips and tricks until you’ve hit the peak of what you can do alone for yourself.

Yeah. I’m really sorry about posting over and over about the same stuff. I have an iPhone and try to reply/post , but lately the app on the iPhone has been crashing a lot so some of the times I was unable to see the feedback I got, or unable to reply. Now it’s working much better. Thank you very much sirwanksalot. (: I’m going to start reading and looking at the stuff momentarily!

Smiter. Thank you very much. Very helpful. I’ll take a test out of the blue book today. I want to score a 2050 or better, but that’s like a 270 point increase if I score 1780 consistently. I have most if not all of winter break to practice and study for the SAT. I’m just concerned that I won’t be able o hit at least 2000 by January.
