I am in my last year at community college as a journalism major, and feel like I have yet to find my perfect fit for transferring. I consider myself somewhat of a "late bloomer." I wasn't a bad student in HS (probably a bit above average, actually) but I had no ECs and didn't try beyond honors courses. In college I have done a lot better and been more active. Here are my stats and criteria:
HS GPA: 3.7 W (estimate)
College GPA: 3.8 (my only Bs are in Math)
College ECs: Phi Theta Kappa, Volunteering, Library Volunteer, might add more
My desires in a school:
- suburban, or close to a city. Would probably hate rural/small town. I love big cities but a school in one might be distracting.
- Little to no Greek life. I don't mind Greek life, as long as its not the main part of the social scene. I don't want a lot of partying and drinking.
- Great journalism/communications/writing. Ideally, I would like a program that combines experience/practice and a liberal arts curriculum.
- Down to earth, quirky, diverse student body. I would love a friendly, dorky, accepting environment.
- Medium size. Nothing too small, but something like 50,000 students terrifies me.
- Pretty campus (haha). I love traditional, tree-lined, green campuses.
- East coast. Preferably New England but I'm willing to look elsewhere.
- Decent food. I would appreciate healthy, diverse options.
Schools I am currently look at include UNC (reach but I love it), Clark, Ithaca, U Miami, Brandeis, Villanova, Muhlenberg, Loyola MD, Elon, Emerson, Goucher, Lehigh, St Olaf, Marquette, Susquehanna, UO, U Richmond, Simmons...
I'm willing to work hard, and I'm planning to write about my academic improvements in my essays. Please recommend similar schools and my chances at these schools?

Oh yes, I also want good academics that aren’t overly rigorous. In other words, I want to be challenged but not overwhelmed with work and studying.
Nothing too expensive, decent aid would help.

Forgot to mention that I’m a URM.

I was gonna suggest UNC (which you already have) and Swarthmore (if you don’t mind the smaller campus). It’s thirty minutes from Philadelphia by train, has a fairly good campus, virtually no Greek life, is very strong in liberal arts, and is one of the most reputable LACs out there, though I don’t know specifics about journalism.

Nice work!I like for you Ithaca, Elon, Muhlenberg, U Richmond, Simmons - you must visit. I don’t think you would get $ at Villanova & Loyola. Miami in OH? (very hard to get too) or Miami in FL? (big night club scene…)

You only have 2 years on campus so you want it to be an accepting place that meets all your criteria. Your chosen major lends itself to making friends who are accepting so that is one hurdle tha will be easier

@skeezeyj Swarthmore doesn’t have journalism, as far as I know, and they would never accept me, but yes, that’s the type of liberal environment I’m going for.
@livesinnewjersey, I mean Miami in FL. I don’t mind the “nightclub scene” since that is off-campus.
Thanks for your responses :)

I would appreciate any recommendations!

I guess not?

Have you asked this question in the Transfer Forum? Go to the main page where all of the forums are listed, and scroll down to find it.

Does your CC have a good Transfer Advisor? Pop by the Advising Center at your campus, and ask the people there to help you with your list. The Transfer Advisor will be able to tell you which places have accepted students like you in recent years, and should have useful ideas for you.

^ No luck. Was hoping I could get some advice here.
