Hey everyone.

I'm an international student from France and I just finished my first year of college. I am studying at Portland State University but really want to transfer somwhere else where I could get a better education. The thing is, my HS years were not the greatest. Not terrible but not fantastic. Probalbly around a 2.5 GPA. I still graduated by passing the french Baccalaureat with "assez bien" honors. Anyway, I realize I screwed up my high school and now I know what I want. That's why I wish to transfer from Portland into a better institution. Can you tell me if I can reach my dream school: University of Wisconsin - Madison.

College GPA: 3.82 after one year (quarters), 47 credits (Calc 1&2, Stat1, Spanish 101,102,103, Econ 201, 202 micro/macro, and the Freshman inquiry 101,102,103 that's pretty much writing). I also got Dean's list for the 2d term and president's list for the 3d.

SAT's: 590 in math, 540 in CR, 450 in WR but I was still in France when I took them so I was not fluent yet.

Not so much extracurricular, I'm a member of the Econ club and international student org.
I tutored in french for a year and I have a job with a Financial adviser this summer.

What do you think of my chances of getting to U of Wisconsin? I also think of Michigan, UCLA, UC berkeley (not very likley for the UCs, I know), George Washington U, Boston U and ohers. I don't really know where I have a shot so if you could help me a little.

Thaky you so much.

No one can help? No opinions? Guys, I really don’t know what kind of school I have a shot at, please any advice?

Your GPA is competitive for the schools you listed, so no need to worry about that. Your SAT scores, on the other hand, aren’t so great. I would check with the individual schools to see if they still want your SAT scores. Many don’t care what you got on the SAT if you’re applying for your junior year and won’t even ask you to send them in. If they do want them, you absolutely need to improve your scores, preferably anywhere from a 100 to 200 points per section.

Thanks. About the SAt, most schools don’t allow students to re-take them after having attended college. There is no way they would take my SAT if I took them in college.
Is the fact that I am at Portland State (which is not a very competitive school) can have a negative impact when schools are going to look at my gpa?

Eh, I don’t know about that. Some schools will let you resubmit. Again, I’d call and ask.

I think they do take into consideration where you’re transferring from, but while Portland State isn’t going to make you stand out, I don’t think it’s going to hurt you, either. What matters most is that you do well wherever you’re at.

Thank you.

No one else has an opinion on this?

You have a tough list of school but your GPA is good and you have quite amount of credits. If a school you are applying to does NOT require SAT scores then don’t take it again. Don’t worry about where you spent your undergraduate career. Lots of students started out at a community college and transfer to great universities.

That being said, you have a decent chance at all the schools you listed.

by the way I went to Paris last year and it was great! :)

So you guys think my list is okay? I mean should I add a “security school” or do you think I have a good shot at those ones? Because my EC are not great, but PSU does not have any club I’m interested in and I’m leaving in a year = not enough time to creat one.
Oh BTW, I’ve been rejected as a reshman to UW-Madison, is that bad for my transfer app?

Thanks
