So here’s my situation. I’m a rising senior and prospective food science major at Cornell, and I have a 3 in AP Chem. I’ve also got a 4 in physics 1 (self-studied) and a 5 in Calc AB. Even though my other two scores are decent, I’m worried the adcom is going to see my chem score, along with some B’s in regular chem, and think I’m unqualified to be in a major that’s so heavily focused on chemistry. So here’s my question - how much will a high subject test score help to combat the 3 on the AP test? On my first try I got a 750, and I’m trying to decide whether or not to retake it (since it’s either retaking the subject test or the regular SAT). Even though I don’t have my SAT scores back yet, I would really appreciate anyone’s input. Thanks in advance!
They don’t take into account your AP scores for admissions. Only the subject tests. You can report your AP scores if you want on the common app, but they aren’t used in admissions.
@TiggyB62 Really? That would be a huge relief. I’ve heard people say that before, but it seems like something that they kind of expect you to report, even though it’s not explicitly mentioned. They are a reflection of a year’s worth of school work, after all, which they do weight quite heavily. Do you think it would it raise some eyebrows if I chose not to submit these (since they already know I took the classes), or is it fairly common?
I’d leave off the 3 from chem and report the others. The main benefit for AP scores is for possible college credit; they are not required for admissions as TiggyB62 said.
Thank you both for your responses. It seems like it’s not a huge deal if I choose not to report some scores, and even if I do, they won’t count against me too much. Now I can focus all my energy on stressing about my essays and SAT’s
Also, 750 is pretty good I thought for SAT Chem subject test. I don’t think you have to retake that. Congrats on good score!
Don’t retake the 750 Chem. I had the same score and it didn’t hinder my acceptance.
