In this crazy process, D is starting to freak out that she may not get into any of her reach schools and not thrilled about her back up school. Any ideas on schools for flute performance that it isn’t too late to apply and qualify for scholarship money? We are so late to the game and didn’t even start the process until September. I’m thinking back up school and transfer or gap year!
You’re right in that you’re too late for most schools, but I can suggest applying to CCPA/Roosevelt in Chicago who may have openings and usually has a 1/15 deadline. She could also look at schools like UC Boulder who has a 10/1 deadline for spring admissions (another option).
Flute is extremely competitive and excellent candidates are rejected each year just because there isn’t enough room in a studio. Also, make sure that she looks at the number of orchestras and the seating arrangements; some schools only have one and the chairs go to the grads first, while other schools have two orchestras and everyone gets to rotate chairs.
I’d suggest a gap year with intense study if she really doesn’t like her choices.
Temple University has a Feb 1 deadline, and it’s Boyer College of Music requires supplemental application 2 weeks prior to the audition (no pre-screen for winds). The latest audition dates are Mar 2 & 3 according to the school website.
